I was getting stuff out of my trunk today and when i was closing it i heard a loud bang and then the trunk just slammed shut. Now when I open the trunk it pops a bit and you have to open it manually and its heavy as hell. I notice the trunk wasn't opening itself before but once you gave it a little help it would stay up. Now it just falls right back down. How does this system work, is it a vacuum actuator or is it the ghetto metal spring system the jap cars have?

Perhaps a spring blew?

Where the spring attaches to the body of the car, the other end to the trunk lid are the weak points where rust and corrosion cause it to break off due to tension. You may well need to get it repaired by welding a new piece of metal in there to reattach your spring.

Exactly , Where the spring attaches to the car, the bracket is very weak and underbuilt. Mine did the same, i just rewelded it back on.

The brackets attaching the boot opening springs Rt and Lt side are a weak point and eventually break.
Mercecdes known problem.
They have a repair kit that bolts to original fixture. I suggest you purchase this kit.
