Car: Mercedes 2000 C230
Problem: Will not come out of park. BAS/ ESP Light On, No Cruse
Miles: 77,200

I was recently on a road trip from Virginia to Dallas when I hit a roadblock. I stopped for gas everything was fine, turned the car off, filled up, and then got back in to roll on. The car turned on but would not come out of park. Then the BAS- ESP dash light came on. Ok so I went through to check all connections, battery check, everything under the hood looked fine, just the basics. I am lucky that I had a 2000 and could use the Pen trick to pop it down into drive and make it home. I was using a car power inverter to run my laptop phone and GPS. So after reading around the forum I came across a couple ideas of what it might be.
1. Maybe the inverter caused an amp change?
2. Could be the plastic piece in the brake pedal that I read about that malfunctions frequently?
3. Speed wheel sensors (something like that)

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light onto what my next move should be. I am just now getting into DIYs and would like to try to fix this myself.

either the stop lamp switch or the shifter itself is bad. you need to scan for codes and see what u have. shifter=$$$
stop lamp = easy fix.

i've had this before. apparently my mechanic said it was a messed up sensor. it was a cheap and quick fix. just keep a pen handy until you get around to fixing it. :P

its probably a brake light switch. have the code pulled.

My failed shifter module caused the BAS and ESP light intermittently. Also no shift from park...intermittently. If that module fails it will manifest in many different ways. Brake light switch would be an option too though.

A Brake light swotch wont stop you getting out of park on any merc will be a gear selector on some models there is enough space to over ride using a bic pen

What switch is activated when the brake pedal is pressed to release the shift-lock then? I am honestly not very familiar with mercedes as whole, just my w202 thus far. I do work in the industry though so I can clear this up for everyone. There is also a bulletin that applies to a brake light switch causing BAS/ESP lights. Cruise of course won't work if brake light switch is out. It still could be an issue with the shift module however. The cruise not working kinda makes me think the switch is involved however...
