Hey guys,

Came home today and when i tried parking the car the shifter wouldn't go into park and it got stuck and wouldn't move past neutral. I tried several times and eventually got it into park.

I left to go to auto zone to buy some parts and when i tried to put the car in drive it wouldn't go in.
the situation is the shifter will go into park and reverse but is free moving thru drive and the lower gears.

My first thought was bushings but its too dark to tell at the moment. I left the car at auto zone.

What would cause the shifter to shift into reverse but not into neutral and drive??

Nevermind ... it was the shifter bushings. I already replaced them. I must say this was the hardest thing i have ever had to do on any car. lol

Hey buddy how did you find out it was the shifter bushings?

What year is your car?
How many miles on it?
Is this normal that these bushings wear out?
Was it difficult to swap them?

Sometimes it feels a little stiff when moving the shifter into DRIVE!
I guess it's the bushings that that fuuuuuks with me when they are stiff?
After a few rowings with the gear lever, it works smoother!
Maybe I'm a hypcondriac, I don't know!

My car is a 1999 with about 58,000 miles

I have a 1995 C280 wit 199K miles.
These bushing do normally wear out and they need to be checked. Just lift the car and look at the shifter linkage you should see 2 bushings, green and white. These usually go out from heat. Personally i found them very annoying to replace. If you remove the exhaust and the transmission rear mount it should be a lot easier to do.

If your bushings checkout then id recommend just taking apart your shifter console and cleaning out the shift track as junk can accumulate there.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Part number "15" is the first bushing (http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=202089&M=112.920&GA=722.606&GM=717.465&CT=F&cat=45H&SID=27&SGR=200&SGN=02)

Part "27" is the other bushing (http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=202089&M=112.920&GA=722.606&GM=717.465&CT=GA&cat=23V&SID=27&SGR=095&SGN=09)
