Dash clock on my '95 C220 doesn't illuminate. Do you just
pull off the dash and replace a bulb or do you have to
replace the clock unit?

You just push off the dash, then replace the bulb.

my outside temperature light went out a while ago, I used to hit it a couple of times and it would go back. This method no longer works, oh well.

If you have a tilt steering wheel, this job is a whole lot easier.
There is a tool mentioned on this web site that looks like a capital letter J...you get 2 of them...put one on each side of dash assembly...you turn the J hook on side and wedge it in past the dash front and once in, twist 90 degrees and pull...I mean pull. I couldn't believe how stuck mine was. I finally put so much oompf into it it slowly came out. The best technique for me was to get the left side to move a small fraction of an inch and then do the right side, back to the left, and so forth. Pulling both sides in unison was fruitless.
Once out, you will see about a half dozen clips that compression wise keep the dash snug...I removed 4 of the clips and put some vasoline type material around the perimeter of the dash. Now whenever I need to pull the dash, it pops out easily.
It does NOT ever rattle.
PS - Now is a good time to fix the speedometer needle if it sticks at zero until you reach 25 mph or so...it seems stuck on the zero peg...ask if you have ever had this problem.
