today the beast did something strange...

While driving as usual, a very faint battery and CEL light came on. They were not fully lit. They were just semi lit. After maybe 15-30 minutes of this the revs got really strange (up and down) and the car finally stalled. The accelerator was not responding either. In drive, car wouldn't move forward easily, was shaking.

Disconnected the battery and 10 minutes later went to start and start fine! Then drive for literally 60 seconds before it repeated and stalled again. This was enough for me to get home and park.

I checked for codes and got P0410. Opened up the air box, cleaned it out and put back together. Also cleaned the actuator connected to the air box. It clicks as usual when I turn key to 2nd position. I had a bit of oil residue from oil getting onto the air filter because of the stupid hose connecting into the air box. But I don't think this caused the issue.

I cleaned the MAS with carb/mas cleaner. No change after all that.

Then I checked the coils and swapped out the connectors, made no difference.

Checked the belts, disengaged the belt tensioner and checked pulleys for play, all solid as a rock.

Lastly I started the car went to the back and while the engine was running disconnected the negative terminal, car died. I can't remember exactly where I read this but this was to test whether alternator is charging properly? I am not sure.

Any ideas?

had similiar symptons, change entire alternator (not just voltage regulator) and battery. No problems after that.

yes problem fixed. Local shop rebuilt alternator in three hours.

Some pics for future reference. The most difficult bit was to put the alternator back. The tolerances are really tight. I used engine oil on my finger tip to lubricate the channel. This made a big difference.
