Try doing a high flow cat upgrade and remove the central resonator. That should improve breathing and give some more sound. You will never get the sound of a c36 or c43. You don't have enough cylinders :D

You could drop in a C36 or C43 engine if you can get one, if you really want the sound, or cheaper to buy a c36 or c43

Basically a 4 cylinder won't sound like a 6 or 8 cylinder because of physics and the number of exhaust pulses per revolution

thank you all for good advices !

I put a C36 exhaust on my C280 and even though it has the same number of cylinders it does not have the same rumble as the C36. Don't get me wrong it sounds much better and a definite improvement....but a C36 it isn't.

What kind of C280 do you have? Straight 6 or V6 because that will also make a difference, not to mention displacement and the amount of air coming out of the engine

In my case the C280 has the M104 motor or inline 6 just like the C36. I chalk it up to the displacement.

andy, type w202 in youtube and there should be a few videos of exhaust swaps and the sound after. Just click on one and the chain begins
Also, the sound should be nearly the same along all the w202's that have a I4 engine

the M104 sounds beast without any exhaust =D

you got a 4 cylinder W202 right ? Do a resonator delete and add a magnaflow 14815 double wall dual tip universal muffler
Its what OCklasse has as his exhaust setup and ive heard it in person numerous times sounds great.

the 14815 usually goes for around $200 USD shipped to your front door.

Along with displacement I think the note has a lot to do with cam timing - overlap/duration etc

I should post how my Borla sounds with the performance headers. I think it sounds deeper than either of the other 2.

You shouldn't be doing a resonator delete. You should have someone who knows how to work on exhausts do it. The C200K uses the same engine albeit not as large a displacement as the C230K. I have a custom catback with 2.5inch piping using a vibrant performance reosnator and muffler on my 230K. it sounds great. You wont get a v8 sound as that is impossible. But it will sound better. At first I thought about ripping the cats out but the guy who did the exhaust recommended not to because to would be very very loud and would sound like rice. I wanted it to sound like a benz still. ie; not shitty. And that is what I got. i recommend you find someone in your area who does custom exhausts. Mine for parts and labor total was somewhere around $500 I think. I am very happy.

I removed the dual cats and have a 3" single cat, with a 2.5" magnafow, but I actually am considering moving to maybe an AMG muffler or something from the V6s/V8s because I dont like the magnaflow, but I don't like the flow of the stock

zmatt
07-09-2011, 12:10 PM
agreed, the stock exhaust is extremely restrictive. It's a shame because as far as 4 bangers go they don't sound too bad. I will be replacing all of it before I am done with the car. I really like the sound of the vibrant muffler, there is no rasp and it has a good bit of rumble. I also have black turn down pipes instead of tips so it looks almost stock. very stealth. My problem with magnaflow is the rasp, it makes everything sound like a civic imo.

gakz
07-10-2011, 04:33 AM
Yes, magnaflow does cause an ugly rasp unless its on a v8

OP if i were you, i would get a cold air intake. since your car is a kompressor, it will have a great sounnd. IMO, a 4 cylinder will never sound as good as a 6 or 8 cylinder car so go for a high pitched sound instead.

Hey guys, so i want to get myself a magnaflow 14833 exhaust system set up but i dont know which ones will fit my vehicle. If anybody could please help me because i have been on ebay looking at mufflers with tips and such and just want to know whats a good magnaflow set up for the w202. I saw lots on youtube and i think i want the magnaflow 14833. I love that deep agressive sound. Any help is great! Thanks guys

Anything with a 2.25" inlet will fit just don't go Japanese lol Borla is an option

Okay thanks buddy! So should I just go ahead and purchase a Magnaflow muffler with tips? What is this 'resonator delete' that I keep reading about? Should I be doing this as well or just go with muffler and tips and I am good? Sorry for so many questions :$ I just want to make sure I get evrything I need at once to complete the exhaust upgrade.

Well it depends where you live and if you need to get your car inspected soon lol Without a catalytic converters I'm not sure if you pass smog test and if they inspect and see you don't have one you won't pass. You'd have to do it on your own because under law no exhaust shop can let your car leave without cats lol Try a magnaflow performance cat, $90 would help a lot because our cars have 2 and a resonator lol I have a magnaflow resonator with my muffler but no cats on it, n no problem man :-P

I got mine from amazon but try summit too or jegs and look for universal fit with 2.25" inlet and you'll be good lol Do it up your style B-)

its way to complicated and expensive to swap a amg engine into a 4 banger

Not really. its much harder to swap in a motor that wasn't mean to be there, but for the M113 or M104 everything you need can be bought online through parts sites. Get a hold of a Mercedes shop manual and it will tell you how to pull and install the motor too.

The big things you need are the engine and transmission mounts. Aside from that its just wiring which if you have the ecu and harness is plug and play, if not spend the extra 2 grand to install a stand alone haltech unit which will probably net you 20 extra HP anyways. have an exhaust shop make a new exhaust and you are good to go. The cost is worse than the work swapping it in. 5.5L AMG long blocks are on ebay for 2k right now, you need the accessories, I was looking up part numbers and the A/C compressor is the same on the M111 and M113 so some accessories may carry over, and the transmission as well, but if you have a hoist and a shop manual and are mechanically competent you can do it in a garage on your own.

EDIT:

just to illustrate this

Motor, $1600 plus shipping <<<< yeah $1600 can you believe honda 4 banger cost more?!?

tranny, $650 plus shipping

here is a list with part numbers to everything you will need. I would wait for the motor to arrive before I ordered things. Often even though they say there is no Throttle body, its included for example.
