So I've been getting this code and decided to check it out today, and the sensor is covered in junk and oil. Anyway to safely clean it to see if I can avoid buying a new one?

Fill this out and use 2001 C-class as your make and model. You will get a $100 dollar gift card. You can go buy a new sensor from the dealer.

see this thread. Some have even claimed to use multiple $100 dollar gift cards at one time to get like $600 dollars in parts for .27 cents

I got $100 one and I know a guy who works at the dealership so I can probably get it for real cheap. Thanks.

I replaced mine as well recently. However, I also changed out ther Camshaft Adjuster Magnet. The Adjuster was covered in oil and grime, along with the harness. Upon my removal, the clips on the harness had cracked due to it being pretty brittle. There was also little to none sealant on the adjuster as well. I got a new adjuster, applied some high temp gasket sealant, and a new clip in and also changed out the sensor, there wasnt any visible signs of wear etc but I replaced it anyways because the code I had related to it. No more CEL and the car seems to run much better, smoother, and quiet.
