Hey club202,
I'm a newbie to this fourm and to the w202 cars
but not to Mercedes :)
I own a w201 and have converted a 1jzgte to it but am currently
finishing off my 2jz conversion with bigger turbo manual box
Nissan skyling diff and front brakes and the list goes on :)
but why I am here (apart from my love for Mercedes :))
is I have recently purchesed a c200 w202 1998 elegance.
Now I am thinking ov an engine conversion for this car and am planing
to go a v8 ls1,1uz?
Now before I hear it is all the bad things I am from Australia and
parts are way to expensive and rare for Mercedes motors than let's say a chev.
Now I won't to know a few thing that I hope u guys can help me out on.
1- when converting to a v8 I have heard u must remove the steering box
and replace with a rack and pinion steering? Is this correct? And has it been done
with a steering box?
2- now the w202 amg came out with a v8 now did they have a steering box or rack?
Thanks guys and I will post pics up ov my w202 and (2j w201 if u guys would like to see)

Hey!,
All W202 have the steering box,the exhaust manifolds on the V8/V6 are a tight fit around it.
You can replace with custom rack but I've heard its tricky due to the lower arm configuration, you'll notice the E55 210 has rack and they flip the lower arms to suit.

Good to see another Aussie and newby to this forum. What model colour is yours?

An LS would be cheap power and is the logical choice, but everyone swaps LS's into everything so at meets and car shows people wont give it the attention you want. My vote is for something weird.

Yeah I agree I won't sumthing different :)
like wen I did my 2j conversion once I started it they poped up everywere :(
but the ls is such a great motor I belive power/money.
Something weird? Any ideas???
Has any one got any pictures ov the c43 or c55 so I can see how close the exhaust is to the steering box?
Also I heard about this CAN system our mercs run(mine has the electric key)
can that be bypassed? Has it been done?
Because I'm shore u should be able to leave the standard hardness running the car an then run a complete standalone for the engine itself?

You have to keep the stock ecu after the swap so you can start and run the car. This is actually pretty common for modern cars. You will need things liek the CAN bus wires, power, water temp and a few other things so the car starts and the gauges work properly. Most of the time the stock ecu is just shoved up in some free space with only the required connections and the new one takes its place. You see this on a lot of stuff post 2000.
