cluster question

Where does the total mileage get stored? On tge cluster or ECU? Thinking about switching clusters

If you've opened a Mercedes instrument cluster you will see there's are several chips on the circuit board. I believe one of this chip stores the mileage information.
On my 97 C230 and 02 E55 this is true. I don't know of other model years.
