sup 202'ers, got a bas/asr light on occasionally. car drives fine when the light is off, but barely moves when the light is on. searched the site & net, with a bunch of "fix it's" but nothing real solid. anybody had the same exact symptoms, and if so, what was the problem? got no access to a code reader, so hopefully i can get some answers here. thanks in advance!

I believe there's no DIY on this subject.

This may be the brake light switch. I'd swap in a new one as they are cheap. If the problem persists, you may need StarDiag, or the HHT to retrieve error codes.

that was the most common problem i kept hearing about. would that cause the idle to fluctuate up & down violently while running super rich also?

I had the same issue. Break Light switch solved it.

Start up the car, take your foot off of the brake pedal and try to move the shifter down into reverse. If there's no obstruction then it's your brake light switch.

Take you foot off the brake pedal while the car is running? I don't think you could move the shifter down to reverse or maybe I'm just dreaming...

couldn't shift without being on the brake

No, that seems like a more serious issue. My light just kept going off. You may wanna dive deeper into it.

yes, it's been on since i bought the car. guess my next question for everybody is what's a good brand scanner?

You have to take it a shop and you will get the answer.

Any generic scanner will give you a generic diagnostic code, but you can always get it scanned for free any Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc. Check back with us with the code.

finally had some time to look into this, pulled up a p0450 & a p1580 code. after reading a little on it, i came up with a bunch of "it could be this" again. anyway to pinpoint it to specific sensors? i don't wanna replace things that don't need to be replaced. bout to go clean off the airflow sensor & see if it makes a difference. i'll be checking back soon with results

I'd be surprised if those codes were related to the BAS/ASR light.
By "barely moves", do you think that the car is in limp mode?

And I don't mean to vent, but why don't members put the year and model of the car in their posts when asking for help?
