OK gents.
My key fob on my 99 c43 started acting weird. It would sometimes stick in the ignition but not turn in the tumbler. I'd pull it out and put it back in once or twice and it'd work. Sometimes the remote lock feature wouldn't work until I was kinda close. Low battery, right?
Replaced both batteries and it was good as new for a couple hours. Then, it wouldn't do anything. No door lock or unlock, won't turn in the ignition either. The valet key works just fine. Am I dealing with a dead key fob or something else?

Sounds like a goofed up infrared sensor in the tumbler. Are you using a key-FOB with the newer style remote?

I would agree, if it still locked/unlocked the doors, but it doesnt. Yep, its the newer smartkey design.

I'd have to guess that the newer smartkeys don't function as well as the OEM keys. I have a buddy who had Mercedes cut and key pro two of the new keys for his 98' C43 AMG and they only work every now and then.

A preface alarm system ( Mercedes Designation: ATA ) on the W202 will come with a "flip-key remote," with the car's infrared sensor located on the rear view mirror. The infrared sensor with be marked with a green and red light.
The facelifted ATA system will feature the new style key, with the in fared sensors now located on the driver's side and passenger door handles.
