My lil 96 c280 has one also. If you run the vin # if I'm not mistaken it will show up in the list of options. Just can't find my copy to be sure. Good luck using it. Seeing how modern cell phones(smart phones) kinda made it obsulete. Your car more than likely has a lcd section just above the ash tray in the center console which is part of the phone also.

It also works on the old analog system that has been decommissioned so the hardware is completely useless.

All US spec w202's had it as an option. It was a simple install. The "brain" connects to a simple connector cable near the radio amp in the trunk, and the phone connects to the bottom rear of the center console behind that flappy paddle thing. The whole reason a w202 has 2 sections of center console was in case you wanted to mount the car phone (it goes in the top section, which was intended for car phone).

and mbsickness is correct. The car phones themselves were all analog. That spectrum was discontinued in the early 2000's, so there's no possible way to use one now.

My sister's 05 C240 came with an optional Motorola V60. My, how the times they are a changin'

It's not really completely worthless. You can still use it for 911 (emergency) calls only - (USA). By federal law analog phones are still able to get on the analog wavelength circuit of any cell tower.

My 1996 C280 had it. Needless to say, I removed it within a day of owning the car.

My old 95 C280 had it. Ripped it out the second I could.

Not really. The infrastructure is shutdown and you get no signal.

Analog NW infrastructure may have been turned off or shutdown but the current system can still accommodate 911 analog calls.
I'm certain because my wife drove my E55 last Feb and the front tire blew up (she hit a metal debris on 237). She's stopped precariously on the carpool lane
shoulder with cars driving by at 65mph+. She realized she left her iphone at home so she used the V60 on the E55 to call 911. CHP came in 10 minutes.

I'd like to try it for myself but I don't want to get in trouble ;)

I lived a bit dangerously and tried with the one in the C280 and it didn't work, I tested it before pulling it out of the car. By comparison the V60, which I think is a GSM based handset is light years ahead of what is in the W202. Mine is of the 1994 vintage and positively doesn't work.

Is it the lower one that won't open? If so open the top lid and in the front of the compartment you will see the latch mechanism. Press your finger in the middle of the two plastic "hinges" and lift the tray up.

If you can't get the top one to open, that's a common problem. Your "latch" has a big button and a little button. Hold the big button down so it doesn't move, and lift up on the small button. That will open the smaller, top portion where the car phone resides. Common problem in w202's. Took my wife months to figure that one out when I had to loan her my '94 because her chrysler sebring's water pump died (which broke the timing belt, which warped the valves, such an idiotic and massive design flaw).
