Probably pointless asking on here, as 90% of you are americans therefore drive auto. Yes, the motor speaking is manual XD
When in neutral, theres a 'clanging' noise under the car. for example, if i was rolling down a hill or a slope at a safe speed in neutral i can hear something that sounds like 'dragging a spanner across concrete' Its strange, ive asked on other forums and none seem to have many answers.
Its starting to do it in 1st gear now, when my revs are only at 800-1000 and i accelerate with hardly any throttle, i can hear the clanging.. Almost as if when the car struggles it will make the clanging noise as well as in neutral.

The car wont make any noise when switching gears, nor is it the clutch.. What the actual hell is this?

Sounds like syncros going on the way out, probably lost a few teeth at some point.

Would that be costly do you know?

I haven't seen the innards of a Mercedes manual transmission so I'll chime in that it could be a throw out bearing.

If it is, then you have to drop the tranny. Very expensive as far as labor is concerned.

A transmission specialist will probably be your best source for determining cost and labor.

so far, to explain the problem further, it feels like tention on a rope. if i accelerate quite a bit, quite fast, and the car chugs you will hear a 'clang clang'
I really hope this is nothing to do with the tranny! just spent far too much on the car to have it conk out on me now :P and also insurance was literally just paid for a few hours ago. argh!

Hi ypkx when you say a clanging noise can you feel the noise at the same time say through the transmission tunnel or through the gear lever ? If gear changes are OK as in no difficulty selecting gears and no noise when changing gears id say g'box mounts or propshaft issues more than syncros and internal g'box faults.

HI,

Gear changes are A, okay! No difficulty as such, but if i were to shift gears while at a stand still, ie traffic lights, you can hear the gears shifting very faintly out the window or under the car. Also, the clanging noise happens when I am rolling down a hill in neutral. Or occasionally, it would clang if i open the throttle at low revs. I personally think it sounds like something is loose, like you said chirsw4266, it probably is gearbox mounts, but i am unsure until i take it to a friend to find out :/

Took the car to the garage, and he took the car for a test drive and came back to tell me theres nothing majorly wrong with the noise. Something to do with wear on the propshaft/driveshaft? So i needn't worry about it.
