1997 C36 AMG

ran fine cold. plenty of power
once warmed up sounds like its hitting a rev limiter at 2.5-4k on. at any more than 50% throttle
bumbumbumbumbum bouncing

Coils? MAF?

the seller is going to take it to his mechanic as it wasnt doing this the last time he drove it.

159k on the odo.

guy wants 3kobo, before it started acting up.

about to sell my C280 on monday for $2800 ;)

hm sinds it's the 97 it can't be the wiring harness, unplug the maf and drive it again if it's gone your safe. could also be a transmission problem

yeah i dont think it was the trans. definitely sounded ignition related. trans seemed to shift fine before the problem happened. exhaust smelled fine, not running rich or smoking ect.

i guess ill see what the guy says. C36's dont come up for sale that often....

My C280 did that when I blew the head gasket... At cold it would run like it was new. Once it hit normal operating temp, water would spray into the combustion chambers and cause some seriously bad misfires and it couldn't rev.

Could also be something cheap and simple like coils, plug wires, or wiring harness. I've got the used, spare one of my old C280 that's still good, but in rough shape. I'd let it go for a song, since it's been used for 10 years.

yeah i'm thinking ignition no CEL or anything. Coolant looked fine didn't smell or look oily. and the level was fine and the owner hasn't put any in recently. He brought it to the shop yesterday so i'm waiting to see what he says.

i doubt its the Head gasket. no oil in coolant, no coolant in oil. everything smells fine, no steam in exhaust ect. i could be wrong

Im doing new wires and plugs (oem Bosch) pulled densos out today which looked fine and relatively new. Wires were pretty beat though. One fell apart while taking it off the plug. They were original. So ordered a set of those. Coils are aftermarket and also look like they were changed in last couple of years will wait to see if I need them too. My mechanic friend is almost positive the problem is ignition related. We ran it through its paces and got it to replicate the problem. Will do it in park as well when the problem shows up. Do cam phasers go on this car? I'll post back after I get the new wires and plugs in. Hopefully that fixes it. I want to beat on the C36 :)

Have you thought about when the plugs are out to run a compression test? Just screw in the pressure gauge crank or turn that puppie over and see what the pressure is on each cylinder. Even though their is no obvious mixture of fluids a compression test will give you a great idea on the internal's such as rings and valve's per cylinder. I picked up my comp tester at a yard sale for a single dollar. And it has been a great diagnostic tool for me. Just a thought bud. Maybe your shop pal has one. Good luck.

Supposedly when my friend was looking at te data stream on his scanner the other day timing was at -30 or something. He said that's connected to the IAT.

Where us the IAT located? on the 94 c280 it was on the manifold crossover pipe on the back drivers side. On The 97 C36 that hole is plugged. Is it in the MAF?

So IAT is in MAF on the 97. Any idea what's causing the code? coils should be here tomorrow so I'll be doing them when I get em. Will post back

Coils fixed the misfire, put them in today. hopefully it stays fixed. So car now has new oem plugs, new sti wires, and new sti coils.

Still have the Intake Air Temp sensor code. Im sure its taking away some power by backing off the timing, but it seems to be reading right 178deg when car was warmed up (based on my bluetooth ob2 scanners live data. Timing was at -5 at idle -30 at 3k rpm.....odd??. Not sure why there is a code? P0110. Anyone have any info on this?

Car is going to an indy shop on wednesday to have trans connector replaced as it is leaking fluid when car is pushed hard (ive read its very common on 722.6) told it would cost $100 including part and trans fluid. im ok with that.
