Sorry to hear. Any warning like slow engagement or did it just quit out of the blue? My reverse was taking longer to fully engage. I babied it for a year but in the end it completely failed.

yeah it would take forever to shift to second gear then i put a bottle of dextron and it went away but then 3rd gear started over reving, then the gas peddle started feeling heavy in reverse, and when i would step on the gas it was stiff and when i would let go it would just feel heavy decellerating.. i was really hoping all i needed was a tranny flush, i thought maybe i had just contaminated the tranny fluid back when i changed out the fan clutch bearing bracket

also the last time i drove it it pissed me off and i stepped on it and it sounded like a turbo it made a wistle noise and boosted pretty fast though its surging and not catching gears i had to drive it back home in second, i dont want to touch it untiil i have the money to fix it, as of now all my money went to the new 202 which is being painted..

I remeber coming accross a few used c36 trans on a salvage site I think out of Baskersfeild. Reason I was looking, and maybe one of you guys can answer this question is I was wondering if they would be a direct swap in my little 94 c220. Why? I can not stand the 3500rpms @ 80-85 mph. I can not cruise this car higher than that so Vegas rns will be out of the question in this car unless I gear it up to cruise at about 90-100 on occation. This car kills me on the freeway and my foot hurts holding it up off the throttle so as not to rev too high when cruising. I am seriously thinking on taller tires to gain about 5% on gearing

On further checking, you have the same 4G-tronic in your c36 as I have in my 94 c220. There is one sitting in a calif yard (Stockton) that is used with 125K on the clock for $684.00 (shipping included to your doorstep)

I know Im hijcking this thread, but answering my own questions here. THe c220's had 3.07 rear end gears, the C280's had 2.87 gears and the c36 had 2.87 in 95-96, then went to 3.07 in 97.

I can easily solve my gearing issue for cruising speed by swapping a 2.87 diff into it. Found one on ebay for $119 for example.

At least the 4speed is a cheaper rebuild.

Yes. From all research I have done it is the same 4G-tronic 4 speed automatic trans that came in the 94-96 c class Mercedes. The only other option was the manual 5 speed. The 97 C36 came with the 3.07 rear end (same as the 94 c220) but also came with the weaker 5 speed auto 5G-tronic transmission. Your 96 C36 has 2.87 rearend gears and the 4G-tronic which is said to be the most reliable transmission Mercedes ever made (and that is a quote from this link- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G-TRONIC )

My c220 is definately a 4 speed. The fourth gear is not an overdrive though, it is a 1:1 4th ratio. GM 4 speed OD trannies have a 3rd gear 1;1 ratio and a 4th gear usually an OD of .70, but they used shorter rearend gears like 3.42 in comparison to pick up the torque. A fourth gear 1:1 is a very nice setup. Its why I want to switch back to a 2.87 rearend becasue I care more about cruising speed rpm than I do drag racing- my motor will last longer and I can cruise to Vegas at a higher speed and not be limited to 80mph for 4 hours while other cars blow by me

my 94 c280 with the 722.4 4spd like your 96 c36 went one day...brake stalling it at a light to get the jump on an infiniti. Thought i'd have to junk the car. I cursed at it for about a week. Started it up and it drove fine... Just yell at it and tell it you're calling one of those "we buy your junk car" places. It'll get its act together. The w202 has a penchant for fixing itself when faced with adversity. Don't ask me why...

oh i also dumped 2 bottles of the Lucas Trans Fix. smoked for a day as it was pushing the excess fluid out, but who knows maybe that was it. Drove fine for 5k after that, then i sold it..

My C220 is a 4 speed. I'd love an extra gear... And 2 more cylinders. LOL

Here was my transmission adventure when I lost reverse. Not sure if it was common, but obviously something broke in mine. I've had other/friends' cars where a tranny flush fixed the issues. My symptoms were "light" engagement of reverse, like it would KINDA move if it was flat and I revved up, but nothing on an incline. Basically the clutch pack for reverse wasn't able to fully engage due to loss of pressure behind he piston. I drove it for a few months being cognizant of how to get out of parking spots because I was still away at college.

worked on both cars all day, first thing i did in the morning was take a trip down to the local parts shop because i was determined to do a tranny flush for the c36
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/Chrisromero/c36/IMAG2355.jpg

but then i changed my mind and decided to just go get a tranny with low miles
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/Chrisromero/c36/IMAG2362.jpg
it came off a 96 c280 with 92k miles on it. everybody pray for me that all goes well

Tranny swap is relatively easy on these. Luckily, there are LOTS of old trannies lying around to swap in and out. They made like 7 million w202's!

ALL pre-update US-model 202's have the same 722.4 4spd vacuum controlled mechanical tranny. It's normally VERY reliable and is also much more predictable than the newer 5 speed electronic suspensions. My C43 would obviously smoke my 94 C280, but my 94 C280 was much easier to live with when it came to knowing what the transmission was going to do. The elec 5spd has a mind of its own, is never in the right gear, and sometimes can't even decide which gear to be in! It's probably THE reason the C43 gets sold so much.
