View Full Version : this might be really dumb but....
I forgot to put the skid plate back on my 98 c230 non kompressor after I changed my oil a couple days ago and it seems to have much much better performance... could the skid plate not being there add to air flow or what? I don't think it was the fact that I canged my oil because I've never had this kind of improvement in performance from that kind of maintinence before

Your engine might just be running cooler because there's more air going into the engine bay. The air filter has a duct that goes by the grill so I doubt it's getting extra air flow from there. These engines are a bit weird when it comes to engine temps. There are old components/sensors that malfunction in high temps so they might function better with more air flow.

That's true, the purpose of the skid plate is to increase aerodynamics and filter out road noise/wind noise. The drive should be a bit louder now without it and also take a minuscule hit in MPG.
Mine has been off for many years, dealer took it off and never put it back on. Usually it hides leaks and that's why people take it off.
The performance increase you experienced might have been from changing the oil. For many years, my mechanic switched to some cheap non-syn 5w-30 oil until I learned how to do my own oil changes with syn mobil1 0w40 recently. After 10,000 miles without an oil change, after I changed it to Mobil 1, the engine was much smoother.

Wow!!! where did you learn that after 10,000 miles before you change oil? Who gave you that advise? I will not go back that shop if I were you.
