I got a Year ‘2000’ 220cdi, stuck in ‘Park’, went on the internet found a way of overriding the system so I can get out of ‘Park’ and go into limp mode so stuck in 2nd gear, so I put the car into limp and thought I’ll take it for a spin and see what happens, after 10 mins the auto gearbox kicked back into life and started working normally, I thought great must be just a small hiccup, and all that day it worked fine.

Next morning, it was stuck in ‘Park’ again, right I thought time to take it to my merc specialist, I put it back into limp mode and headed towards his workshop, after 10 mins of driving the auto gearbox started working normally again. Got to his workshop explained the issue and he said a possible cause and the cheapest fix is to replace the brake switch, so I got that replaced and again it seemed ok when I left his workshop.

But next morning it was stuck in ‘Park’ again, I phoned my merc man and he said bring it back. So back into limp mode, headed towards his workshop and guess what? Yes after 10 mins it started functioning normally again. Anyway got to his workshop, he plugged his diagnostic machine in and it kept coming back with the error ‘faulty EGS’, so he said that needs replacing….I did ask him if he is sure, but he insisted his diagnostic system is really good and if states that’s the fault, it’s got to be. So he phoned merc main dealer, new EGS ecu is £700-800, forget that, the car is only worth about £1000….he said get one from ebay/breakers yard and he showed me where to fit the EGS and said it’s plug and play…managed to get an exact part from a merc breaker for £70 with three month warranty…..plugged it in and guess what, still stuck in ‘Park’…aaahhh!!!…I left the car running for 5-10 mins, come back to it and guess what? The gearbox starts working again, went back several hours and stuck in ‘Park’ again

So new brake switch and EGS ecu, but still same issue…it seems when something warms up, it starts working……please help???

Find somebody with a STAR diagnostic tool. "Good enough" usually pulls only simple OBDII ( North American diagnostic codes for us ) like electrical shift solenoids going bad. You might have to bite the bullet and go to the dealership for the diagnostic.
