Hi all, first post here. I am buying a C230 Kompressor and will be changing all fluids and filters ASAP.

Zerex-05 coolant I know, but not sure what ATF it needs? How much usually gets swapped with a pan drop?

And what weight synthetic oil should I run? Car didn't come with a Owners Manual so I don't know what Mercedes originally called for.

Thanks :)

You can use "Fuchs ATF 134" for the automatic transmission. About 4-4.5 quarts gets swapped from a pan drop change. If you do the pan drop change about 3 times over 3,000 miles, it will get all the old fluid out. Sort of a waste of time, but since our cars don't a torque convertor drain, it's the easiest way to get a complete transmission fluid change.

I use 6 quarts of Mobile 1 0w40 for oil changes.

Thanks I appreciate the help!

Haha, and I used to think $5/qt for Chrysler ATF+4 was annoying... seems a gallon jug of Fuchs 134 is $50. lol.

Any idea what gear oil is needed for the rear end?

I found a local shop that specializes in Mercs so I should be all set :)

What's the name of the shop? I might want to go have them do somethings for me too since i'm local as well :)

For the differential, I used about 1.3 quarts of Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil.

Touring Car http://touringcarinc.com is the place my mechanic recommended. I'll be going to talk with them in person next week. 10 minutes from my house :D

There is also http://www.mercedesbenz-gcaw.com Goose Creek. When I called them and asked about doing a pre-sale inspection they said sure, for $85. Oh and the CEL is on? That'll be another $85 to plug in the code scanner  So I'm not sure that I'll be giving them much business.

That's about the worst of it. Need to figure out how to take care of this most economically. Doesn't need to be showroom condition and at least it's on the roof. I wonder if a black wax would be enough to blend it mostly in.

Some elbow grease, a layer of rubbing compound, a few layers of polish and wax should make it look ok. You'll have to put in some effort though, but like you said, at least it's just the roof.

Try to fix the rubber part of the antenna too, it's a cheap fix and you can find the parts for less than $20 on EBay!

I used mercedes genuine atf fluid in my 2000 c230k. I didnt want to take any chances of ruining my perfectly good auto electronic 5 speed that only comes in 1 year, the 2000. I did find a good buy on ebay for a bunch of genuine quarts for cheap. the thing tho.. I bought one of those Dip sticks for our cars for 25$, and I had to take my car into the dealer for a new key.. and they inspected my car for free and said my trans fluid was low 1 qt!! its been 1 year and car is fine!

also right now, I bought from autohauz AZ some genuine mercedes coolant. I think it was 25$. I figure I can use it on my 190e swapped M104 3.2 and my c230k.

car has over 150k and under 200k. changed cluster.

Hmmmm, very interesting. I didn't know the 2000 had a special transmission. I'll really have to research it then. Do you happen to know what the technical name/model number for this tranny is?

We just got it home today. I'm busy peeling off the tint. Someone put a second layer on over the factory tint and it has started to bubble and streak. Once I get it all cleaned off I'll go have it tinted this weekend.

yeah, the year 2000 of the W202 was the only year with the updated 5 speed tiptronic transmission. I believe it is a bit smoother and more robust. Your shifter looks different than mine...which looks like this:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8093/8475428472_e949041bdd.jpg

yours doesn't have 4,3,2,1 on your shifter gate. To switch gears manually, you just tap the shifter left or right.

Wow I like that insert! Mine is more of a 'burnished wood'. Kinda meh.

Btw Goldeni, is there any particular wax / polish you would recommend? Looking to pick some up today and give it a shot this weekend!

I appreciate the help :)

Hey Melk, I usually stick with Meiguars when it comes to wash, polish and waxing. But no matter how expensive the product you get at a retail store, it will most likely still be "consumer grade", which is fine for the rest of the car. Your roof might will require some heavier duty professional grade compounds to fix and blend. You should go to a car detailing forum and ask for advice to do it right. I'm on a British Mercedes forum and they have a really good detailing section.

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/detailing/

You can register and try asking them, they're always very helpful.

The error light on your dashboard means there is a burnt out bulb in either your headlights, foglights, front/rear sidelights, turn signals or brake light.

Hope that helps!

I'm planning on washing my car on Sunday as well since the weather will clear up. The weather in Charlotte is quite unpredictable, apparently there will be icy rain tomorrow like a few weeks ago even though it was about 60 degrees today...

Well the quote to paint the roof came in at $585. Time for a second opinion!

Though we may end up flipping the car altogether. Paid a great price. Fix up a couple issues and we might be able to turn around and sell it for +1k. The sagging headliner is a real bummer :( Very clean otherwise.

Ok so I am waxing the roof today just as a precaution to stave off any further damage. Full on reprint can wait.

Is there some sort of seal that belongs around the spark plugs?

There's my front flex disc. The rear is not nearly as bad. It may have been replaced since it's a lot easier to access. But this front one just has a huge amount of slop.

Ok so I've finally gotten to drive the car a bit (it is my wife's after all, haha...) and the transmission is just embarrassingly bad. Partial throttle starting from a stop seems the worst. You MUST let the car warm up to operating temp otherwise it bucks and jerks. Just amazingly bad.

I've done the 'transmission reset' procedure which hasn't appeared to do anything at all.

I'd really feel better doing at the very least a pan drop and fluid/filter change but it's gonna be a hard sell. It was such a cheap car to start with she doesn't want to go pouring money into it. Still, I'm sure fresh fluid would likely do a world of difference after 110k miles.

Tranmission fluid leaking from the connector spacer and traveling up to the TCU will cause erratic shifting.

Picked up:

2 quarts Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil 75w-90
6 quarts Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil 0w-40
Mann Oil Filter, Air Filter, Fuel Filter

Will feel a lot better once this is complete.

CEL came back after being off for a short while after disconnecting the battery. Shows same 0170 Fuel Trim and new 0442 for Evap system.

I checked my MAF and it does look new and is the matching Bosch part # so that is reassuring though I guess I will need to check it with my meter to confirm no malfunction.

Oxygen sensor will get replaced I guess. Hopefully that will improve the overall fuel economy some.

Evap leak I am bummed about. Hopefully not the purge valve solenoid and just a loose hose somewhere.

Where is the spacer and/or TCU ?

The spacer plug is on the right front corner of the transmission fluid pan. The connector line should have a vinyl cover over but many folks will use a zip tie to seal the end of the connector line.

Can the plug be removed and cleaned? Electronics spray cleaner?

I'll have the car up on the lift later today.

When you remove the plug, it will be covered in ATF. It helps to drain and save the fluid though you only loose a little bit of ATF during the removal process. Remember that the spacer plug is not the actual plug itself, it's just a locking shell with two O-rings.

I'm having a hard time picturing this. I'm sure it will be clear once I am looking at it.

What exactly are we trying to do here with this procedure?

Just removing the housing shell and replacing it with a new one. That should stop the leak.

Ahhh, ok. So where is the TCU in relation to this?

I have enough small things to do today so I'll skip the plug and do that as the same time as this:

The TCU is under the emission control box, at the rear of the box. It is the cartridge with 3-4 locking connectors.

Ok so the dashboard Oil light has been coming on while driving. This was happening before the oil change and I hoped it would stop afterwards but it has not.

It is not on from a cold start but once you get moving it will come on. When you come to a complete stop, it turns off.

Ideas?
