There is a older man down the in my city selling a beautiful 1996 C36. I spoke with him briefly tonight concerning any issues with the vehicle and he insured me he has owned since brand new and only issue the head gasket is blown. Is this a major fix/expensive fix on the C36?? He just purchased the 2011 E36 so he said $2000 and it mine. the motor has 220,000KM but if it not a huge or expensive fix I want to buy it. Think I should jump on this?

Can he show you reciepts of work done??? Is he willing to tell you where the work got done?? Is he forthcoming with honest asked question's i.e.(did you change the oil) if he is you probably might have a workable awsome deal. If the headgasket is the only issue. Body great(no rust) good tires, breaks, rotors, everything amg!! If nothing else the interior is worth that!! Not to mention the rims, trim, skirts, exhaust alone is worth 600-1,200$. Your choice bud I'd be on it like white on rice!!!!!!!!!!!

So I met up with this gentleman tonight and this car is gorgeous! No rust, interior in great shape (back seats look like they`ve never been sat in) all brakes and everything seems to be amg. The old timer was very straight forward with me and has all the recods from the cities MB dealer. I am taking it to my MB shop to have my guy have a thorough look at this car before I committ. I am hoping for the best I have been dying for and AMG. Thanks anf6789 and taz069 for your posts.

Head gasket is quite expensive to replace. It is almost entirely labor. On my C280, cost was about $1200usd back in 2000. IMHO, the car is still worth it at ~$3500 (car + repair).

DIY cost a good amount less than $500 I'd say $55 for hg kit and $100 for head resurface.. Add another $100 for miscellaneous parts and a good week to do it.. Save a good chunk of change... Though you also should check to see if the wiring harness has been replaced with an updated one... Otherwise you'll be doing that, too..... $1k :/

My mechanic will be looking over this car on saturday. I will be saving large on labour seeing how my MB tech has been my grandfathers best friend for over 50 years. He only charge me parts and I`ll toss him some coin and on the side like always just out of good heart cuz his time is still money. I am going to try and post some pics of the car this weekend to get some feed back on what all you guys think. Thanks again for the replies guys :)
