Guys,

If all other steering components are tight sometimes steering play can be attributed to play in the steering box.

The play can be adjusted by loosening the jam nut and adjusting the set screw out for less play/more friction, or inwards for more play/less friction.

The friction is measured by detaching the drag link assembly and placing a suitable Ncm torque wrench on the steering wheel to achieve a value of 100 - 160Ncm accross central steering area.

Does anybody know if the torque wrench is mounted off centre of the steering wheel(it looks like it is in wis but hard to tell).. if so ,by how much?.

Cheers,

Ill have to ask the boss who is a bit old school and knows these answers, but its something along the lines of turning the jam nut in a way that you feel it takes up the slop and nothing to do with a torque wrench on the center of the steering wheel.

I've never applied that method on a 202. But 123's and 126's- not all uncommon! But those have steering slop like no other.

Pagz, the way I've done it on W201's & a BMW, was to jack the front wheels off the ground and adjust the screw (out on the Merc, in on the BM iirc) once you can feel some resistance starting to occur via the St. Wheel, back off the screw a 1/8 turn and so on. Never had any issues doing it that way and it seems the older the car the more worthwhile it is adjusting the box.
