cracked head

I bought my '99 MB C230 K Sport less than 3 yrs ago. It had 78,400 mi. It's been my daily driver and now has 113,500 mi. Two weeks ago it started loosing coolant and then started blowing white smoke. My mechanic said that the head is cracked. I am dismayed that this happened, especially since I take good care of my car and have never abused it nor drove it hot to where the head would crack. Is this common with the W 202?

Thanks for the replies, guys. My engine has been swapped out for another one ( w/ 79,000mi). I will get my car back on Mon or Tues. I can't wait to get back behind the wheel.
