I just went through something similar with a 2003 ML350 where a no volume situation turned into a complete radio replacement. Please tell me these Alpine/Becker units do not have the same issues as the ML's MCS.
The radio worked fine this morning on the way to the shop for window tint. I turned the car on, then turned the radio on and suddenly I have no volume whatsoever. It affects both the radio and the CD changer.

Power amp in trunk most likely. Never heard of a stock w202 radio failing.

An update on this problem:
About 3-4 hours after posting this, I went out and removed the radio head unit from the car to verify the fuse wasn't blown. After reinstalling it, the radio still produced no volume after entering the code. I went into the trunk to check the connections to the amp but could not find the amp, just the wiring. After pulling the carpet back, I moved some wires in an attempt to trace its location. It was getting dark so I decided to pick it up as next day's project.
I started the car to bring it in the garage and the radio volume works again!!! I did some searching and found out in a thread on Club202 a while back a person had his windows tinted with the same symptoms. He believed some wires got wet either behind the door panels or in the amp are of the trunk as water from activating the adhesive on the tint film may have ran down, intruding in the areas controlling the sound system. This may have been the case with me as well. Either way though, I notice my radio still does not read my CD changer, which leads to the headunit being suspect.
Radio volume still worked this morning by the way...
