I am looking for some information regarding the differences in engines between the M113 4.3L and the 5.5L.

So far, I know that the pistons and connecting rods are different. How about the camshafts? What other differences are there? I will have to carry over my headers (or buy/fabricate a better one) as well as the oil pan, alternator, etc etc......

Asking because I am looking to build one. Need information so that I can make proper decisions going forward.

Thanks!

edit: I am looking for hard facts, either in print or from people very familiar with the engine (cough cough Remo). Please dont post "I think or I heard that....."

Pagz would be able to tell you what's different on the internals, I know pistons are larger, other then that I didn't care to dig deeper.

As far as swapping, you must carry over:

-Wire harness (unless you buy a CLK55 W208 engine)

-upper and lower oil pans (unless W208 engine)

-oil pump was different due to length of the neck/pan shape

-Exhaust manifolds (unless 208 engine again,)

-2 different crank sensor styles, 98-99 & 00'+ were different plugs, must use the crank sensor off your current C43 along w/harness

- intake manifolds, valve covers, flex plates, starter, most other accessories were same, belt tensioner was different but interchangeable.

There was also a coolant plug on the back of the ML55 engine I swapped last time into a C43, the W202, W210 & W208 have a fitting there for a remote transmission oil cooler, the W163 had that capped off, so I had to remove the cap and press fit a coolant fitting at the back of the passenger side cyl head. It's not a big deal, but some people I read prior wouldn't buy ML55 engines because of that. Lol

I was looking just last week at the comparison between the early 113 5.4 in 202/208/210 vs the one in the 203/209, I'm confident the pistons are changed to increase CP to the apparent 11:1 although cannot be sure as the timing cover also updates(could be changes in deck height),cams are new and although the crankshaft and flywheel update I think this is due to the lighter torque converter and different mounting bolts. Con rods and heads are same on all the 5.4's. I was looking into this because a lightly damaged C55 with 24kkm's turned up locally but I decided I've had enough engine play for now ;)

As for the M113.944(C43) vs the M113.980(210 E55) and M113.984(208 CLK55): (note C55 202 is M113.983, coolant plug is only reason I believe)

-External trans cooler is only found on the C43,so the coolant plug for trans cooler mounted to RH head is only found on the 944, that means any 5.4 donor will need this, get from MB they are cheap and easily damaged on removal. The 980 and 984 combine the trans cooler in the radiator.
-Oil pump is only common between 944,980,984 so specifically made for these AMG engine only.
-Oil sump is common on 944,980,984
-As mentioned conrods and pistons are 5.4 specific
-Heads and valves are 5.4/5.0 specific
-intake manifold is same 944,980,984 plus many M113.
-Camshafts are specific to 5.4's MY98 - 02
-As mentioned Exhaust manifolds are common on 944,984 (pretty tough improving on these there is little space and dual layer construction cuts down engine bay heat)

As Remo mentioned all the accessories are common on 944,980,984 however the HB is 5.4 specific $$.

With later model 208/210 MY 06.2000+(code 801) comes a change in ME from 2.0 to 2.8,W202 only ever reached ME2.0, there are subtle changes to electronics everywhere throughout, as I know the CPS,TB and some other sensors have different plugs. You can swap all this from your C43 so not much to worry there. later M113 also have common updated parts which is a bonus.

does anyone know the exact weight of the M113 engine?
is it around 200 kg?

I think that coolant fitting has been found on 210 and 208. I'm not sure that's what I've read.

Oil pumps are same but the shape of the necks are different to accommodate different oil pans. So the C43 oil pump won't fit on an ML55!

The RH head coolant plug is an interesting one!

When searching epc it only shows a blank for RH head C43, E55,CLK55..the details only show as having "001" water outlet for the LH head, I think this is why the engine numbers are specific for the M113.983 202 C55 its just a M113.980/M113.984 engine with coolant plug added. For the M113.980 vs M113.984 minus the ME2/2.8 changes it's just exhaust manifolds afaik

this info is only as good as the epc operator, but it has works well for me so far ;)

Dennis, I cannot confirm weight, though I have read 175kg recently in a review, there was a guy on Peachparts that weighed his with all aux, try search there!

i once red the M113 engine weighs approx 200kg, so 175kg is ok if this is correct?
thanx bro

Np, Im not sure if this was long block only or with aux ;)
