Today I added a stainless steel cross brace to the lower rear subframe. There was a stamped stiffener hole in the subframe metal that I used to connect the brace. I machined two small inserts to fit into the existing subframe holes then used a 1.5" wide x .25" thick bar and bolted it to the subframe. I don't really know if it does anything yet.

Thanks for the tip!

These are popular on street honda and early mk1 vw. I think I will have a look see and see what I can fashion under there.

The subframe chassis connector is the shiny bar in the center of the picture that is bolted right above the lower rear control arm.

Why, yes it is tightened with the shiny new bolt. One on that side and a 2nd on the other side. I like shiny new things.

The cross brace is horizontal "shiny" piece that is connected to the subframe pieces that are used to bolt the lower control arms to the car.

looks really nice and not to noticable like the ones on the hondas. Did you drill anything for the mounts or the wholes werw already there?? did you just buy the bar for a metal shop and cut and fabricated it ???

the bar looks good except for a few swirl marks, haha.

I did just buy the stainless bar stock from a metals supplier and then cut and drilled the bar to fit the existing holes in the subframe.

I left the swirly marks to give people something to bitch about.:D

Joey, so sorry to hear your new pen is not shiny. I would have a meeting with your office manager to straighten that out.:) I love shiny things!!!!

Thomas,

Yea, that is some diff oil that was there when I bought the car and I never cleaned it up. I changed out the fluid and have never seen any fresh leaks. But I do need to clean up the oil.

Jeff I asked because my diff has given me some **** lately. The final X of the year '03 I broke some teeth off the pinion gear. They replaced the diff and forgot the vent tube, 20 miles later, ala blue smoke and whining noise from diff.

Anyway, third diff, still having problems... wondering if other tracked/ X'd MB diff's were failing.

Did you use MB oil or a substitute?

Thomas,

I use Redline Lt. Shockproof gear oil. It seems to be pretty good stuff. Also I throw in 2oz per qt of Oil Extreme concentrate.

I change it every 5000-7000 miles.

Sweet thanks Jeff... I am going call my shop and try that oil combo

the sound of the teeth in the pumpkin was frightening as anything... arguing with MB over the cause was even more fun. :)

If you clean off the oil, it will start leaking!

Good idea on the brace. I did that to my subframe on my 300E, but I hammer forged a piece across the back, and then welded it.
