View Full Version : My C36 Brake Jobs..

I am NOT trying to do a write-up on how to change the pads on C36's but I just thought I share this..

Since front and rear caliper brake of C36 are multi piston fixed calipers (4piston front and 2 piston rear) the pad swapped is pretty easy, as you only need to take out the pin and the retainer. After that , you should use your imagination to take the pad out (pretty straigh-foward :) )

With the stock pad that dust a lot, I want to get dustless pad so bad...
With the current rotor vibrating during hard breaking, I just want to replace the rotor as well..
With the newer AMG car has more vibrant and cool looking brake, make me want to get a BBK, but the cost is just not justifiable for me at the moment..

So I order G2 paint, and Front rotor along with dust less pad for all 4 corner.. (PBR Deluxe) ;)

Since I got the paint arrived so quickly...so I decide to paint the caliper first before changing the pad.

To my surprise my original "Black" front caliper turn out to be Metal color after I cleaned using Brake cleaner supplied in the "G2" kit..
(the I remember when Steve put a brand new C36 brake system on his W202 his caliper also in this finish :) )

Before and after cleaned using brake cleaner

However the huge rear caliper is black...:D
http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SQAaA9wUUOQsVnXOi*L0slX4yRsev23BGpl02*CtdUE7!SZ7b Khepg8n4gzg5Dl0*TAucJ9UWbASGlM1dceqogTU9hCUTZBwq9O Vjt9iJJkKZjadSSD2dA/119-1937_IMG_msn.jpg

Here is the result after painted

And after waited for 24 hr I proceed with changing the rear pad..

As you can see, the pin, and the retained has a lot brake dust bake on it overtime...yuk... so ugly..
http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SQCiAtcUEeMsVnXOi*L0smvlSX8ofCOdbkwdthxivhd6CF2yY 9AqabgRSrDOPzaLTjNYlYWrSZv!NkZLSi4w9BBGMOVs38F!sui ZhqXPRo5zi15YbJNYdg/119-1941_IMG_msn.jpg

And taking out the pad is not as smooth as I expected. Again blamed on the rust and baked dusts overtime..
So after I got the pad out, I clean it the inside of the caliper using dremmel and the small wire brush attachment.
And the new ones slide in just nice after I cleaned it... :D:D

Look at the comparison (red circle) new pad vs old pad...
I guess I never realized that my old pad is almost worn out..

OEM Brake pad paste (anti squel pad). Thanks to Phil at Mercedesshop

Voila The new thick ! pad are in :D:D (pardon the smudge on the caliper). And this is another cool thing, the smudge is easily wiped off using water and paper towel..
G2 claim is really true that the brake dust won't stick to the paint.... man I like G2 product..

As I mentioned before the stock pin and retainer is ugly, dirty, rusty with a lot of dust bake on it. So I already have new pins and retainer..

Now its the turn to do the front...

And now after I put the 18" Mono, the caliper is still visible.... ;)

Now the silver caliper match with the rest of the car... "silver bullit" :D:D:D

I am hoping the pedal feel will improve since my old pad are almost worn out... and the new ones looks so much thicker..

I guess I'll take her out and test the brake :D

looking good J Irwan, I am surprised that the calipers aren't black, mine look black too but i haven't cleaned them yet.

Another alternative is to wire brush the calipers, it gives it a silverish/polish look also, at least it does on my friends car i do it for. After seeing your job i am to try it out, yours look so nice.

Looks fantastic JI! Kind of surprised you didn't go for fancier rotors. Man that Salt is killing your car.:(

Paul,
I couldn't find directional cross-drilled or directional slotted rotor, so I guess I'll settle with this...
Once they have the directional slotted or cross-drilled I might change to that later :p

As far for the salt, its not a problem , we don't really have much snow here in Indiana, the rest of the car is fine except one of the 3 link arm show rust and a little bit on the subframe mount..

I wonder why it that, probably that part didn't get rinse evertime I washed my car during winter (at least 1 a week sometime 2 just to sprayed underneath to get the salt and snow comes off ) :D :D

I haven't test the pad yet...probably this afternoon, I got to find the right time so that I could have empty road near my place to broken-in the pad and new rotor :)

One addition, when I did the pads on my C36, I needed to compress the caliper pistons inwards to correctly seat the new pads. This was made easier by loosening up the bleeder valve.

Yupe... Rik

I ended up dismounting the rear caliper as well, and I opened the brake fluid reservoir cap, and then push the brake piston back so that I could put the new pad in ...

And on Boy the pedal travel is definitely improved and I can feel that the brake bite earlier..

I wonder how much better it would be if I were to buy porterfield R4S..:D

Most important of all, now my brake is dustless.. yay.. :)
