Hi, I posted a couple of questions about a noise that my car makes ...
in the end I went to the dealership and had it examined. After charging me for an hour of labour ,they weren't able to tell me where the noise is coming from exactley.
The technician said it could be 3 possibilities:
1) hydraulic valve lifter on cylinder #4
2)flexible something in the flywheel(he did tighten the bolts on the flywheel)
3)also the rear piston
the noise I'm talking of is a ticking noise that you can hear at idle1500RPM when the engin is at operating temperature.
I don't have any garanty on the car and will not pay 95$ an hour..
so please give me advice
thank you
if you need more infor to figure this out just e-mail me

is the ticking sound rythmic (sp?) or sporatic?
have you had your fan belt looked at?

A good question.
Also is the ticking always present or intermittent? Try to describe the sound in as much detail as possible. Any chance of posting up a sound clip? Another possibility could be the A/C compressor...but it's tough to say without more information.

the sound is prety much rythmic. After the engin reaches it's operating temperature, you can hear the noise when i keep the gas pedal steady at 1500RPM, but you can also hear it (alot less) and when the motor is just running. I realy don't know if they checked my fan belt. With teh hood up, you feel as if the sound is comming from hte engin, but once the car is lifted, you feel like it's from underneath???
This is so frustrating!

sounds like: clack,clack,clack,clack (realy fast)
I might be pushing it, but almost like a small diesel engin.
How would I post a sound clip?
The tech also said that I shouldn't worry about it????

Easy for him. I'd worry like crazy...sort of.
I have a clicking type noise from my car, but I've been told to replace my belt. Something to the effect of it's worn. Plus it's rythmic. So it is similar to the sound of having a nail in your tire.

i'm far from being a "car repair man", but I also believe that my noise has something to do with the valve. I have to find a decent garage that specializes in MB and get it fixed before it gets worst

I had a plug wire come loose off a plug once and it made this noise. Also a loose spark plug could rattle and make noise.
What kind of oil are you running in this car?
How many miles on it? Does it have the belt shock that goes bad and makes a rattling sound?

one trick that you can do is draining the engine oil and filling back up with transmission fluid.. let run for a bit and drain and refill with engine oil. the lubrication properties of trans oil is much greater than engine oil, but doesnt have all the detergents that engine oil has, so its not a good idea to run it insead of engine oil! make sure to keep and eye on the engine and shut down if you hear any odd noises.. if the noise your talking about goes away then you may have cleared it up with the trans oil.. make sure to flush the system a bit and repl engine oil and filter. it may work and be cheaper than pulling off the valve cover and replacing a sticky haydaulic valve.
just an idea

my car has 105 000km, it's a 98. I get my oil change at the dealership so it's synthetic MB oil
"does it have belt shock that goes bad and makes rateling noise"
sorry but no idea what your talking about???
How do I remove the black plastic thing that runs on top of the engin cover and is connected to the MAF sensor...so I can take a look at my plugs and wires, make sure that they'r fine?
Should I just tell the MB dealer to clean my "sticky hydraulic valv lifter on cylinder #4 "???
thanks

Take it to an Indy first before returning to a dealer.

every independant garage that i went to in the past few days has been telling me the same thing: something with the valve.
I'm taking it to a indy who specializes in MB, see what he says.
BTW, i just changed the fuel filter,39$ at MB + 20 $ labour insted of 120$+tx at dealership; CRAZY. What should I expect from a new fuel filter?

ok, i'm fed up!
went to a indy....the lifters are ok, chain is fine.
He emptyed the oil I changed at the MB dealership. Put in 20-50 Castrol (not synthetic) and told me to add an additive from the carshop...I put WYNN's FUEL TUNE-UP.....balls, the noise is still there.
I did 2 things that the technician at MB told me not to do.
What now???????
Spent 320.00CDN$ all in all.

There's a few thread over at:

I believe on the ticking sound. You might want to check there.
If I can recall, alot of people spent alot of money to get rid of the ticking sound but I don't think they ever got it fixed.
