Hello

I have 1998 c230...

everything pretty much stock...

I recently bought c7 sport package wheel out of 2002 c class coupe....

To my knowledge....I thought you don't need any suspension modification up to 17 inch wheel....

But I just called MB dealer just to make sure and this person from MB told me that going bigger than 15 inch is not recommended....

Would it be a problem if I switch to 17 inch wheel without modifying my car????

Anbody with 1998 c230....can you give me an advice?????

By the way....new wheel I bought is 225/45/17

What dealership did you talk to???? I had the 17" Monobloc II's on my 98 C230....and I had my car dropped 3 inches. I had no problems, besides the transmission going out....maybe the 17" wheels caused that.....  :D

As long as you adjust tire size to accomodate for the +2 in wheel size, you'll be just fine.

What plus sizing does is correct the wheel & tire diameter by decreasing the series tire you are running. Doing so, you maintain the same diameter as th 15" wheel.

Have you ever seen a larger wheel (say 18 or 19") and notice the tire is very skinny? Now look at your 15" and notice the tire is fat (lots of rubber). If a tire is correctly sized to a larger wheel, the total diamter of the 15" wheel and tire should be really close to the total diamter of the 18" wheel and tire.

To my knowledge, you do not need any suspension adjustment. Maybe an alignment at best.

For more info, you can go to Tire Rack's site and look up Plus sizing.

Hope this helps.

I asked MB in greenville SC

Do you really think that the 17" wheel messed up the transmission???

OK!!!! I think I am too serious about the fact that I may have bought the wrong wheel...

Thanx for the reply...

Another question...

Current size is 205/60/15

The wheel I got is 225/45/17.....

Do I need a spacer installed since I got wider wheel???

And finally, moding of my car have finally begun...

I've ordered bosch clear corners and avantgard grille from bekkers....

next part I am going to go for is get one of those hazard triangle into my trunk lid.....

Thank you for the reply

I run 17's with no problem with dropped suspension. You should be okay.

I have 18 inches and stock was 15.

my dealer measured the sizes because they weren'T sure my wheels were legal toput some problems I had with my ASP under warranty.

Finally they said everything was under the norms.

Don't do spacers....what that is going to do is push your wheels out. You will never NEED spacers, but people with non wide tires like to put spacers in to fill in the bodylines of the car.

225's aren't that big, I was running 245's on my 17's....I know run 275's with my 17's:D :D

Is 225/40/17 tires any different than 225/45/17 tires????

Different riding feel????

Yes they are completely different.

225/40 means that the height of the rubber from rim is 225mm times 40% = 90mm of rubber on the rim.

225/45 means 225*.45 = 101.25mm of rubber.

So in the later, there is more tire and thus more rubber between the ground and your wheel.

Also, 225/45/17 was the stock tire on my C43. Since they are the same chassis, shouldnt be any problem.

check it w202mod, welcome aboard

your old wheel: 205/60/15 (width/profile/rim size)

{[205mm * .60(profile %) ] * 2(top and Bottom)}/25mm(convert to inches) = 9.84 inches.

9.84inches the total side wall of your tires ( top and bottom) + 15inches the rime size = 24.84 inches. This is approx. diameter of your old wheel with the tire.

new wheel. 225/45/17
{(225 * .45) * 2 } / 25mm/inch = 8.1 inches = 17inch riim = 25.1 inches in the new diameter.

So tell that dealer to shove it, b/c of the overall diameter is about the same. Haha J/k Welcome to the Club202. Hope i've been of help

OK.....

So I guess my previous concerns are now solved....

Thank you everybody....

modifying my car is not easy but I love it....

One last question...

Will the speedometer read the speed different???

I mean will the speedometer give wrong speed due to slight change in total wheel diameter???

If so....how do you come over this problem???

If the change is not dramatic, then you should be just fine. Also keep in mind you can alwaysa have your spedo recalibrated.

Sorry if my other post was not clear, I use metrics. ;)

w202mod

and it was not because of you using the metric scale that got me hard to understand.....

It was just because upgrading the wheels have something to do with their weight instead of their radius at that time....

your reply was very helpful...thank you...

and how do you calibrate your speedo???

is it something that you can do by your self????

or do I have to take it to the mechanic???

bring it to a speedo shop, they should be able to do it.
