View Full Version : intake resonator
has anyone removed the resonator from their stock air box? i have seen people do this on their e36's to give their car a deeper sound while on throttle.

is there even a resonator? all i remember seeing when i took apart the airbox was:
1) airbox cover that attaches to the MAS
2) airbox underbody that holds the air filter, connected to the stock "ram-air" hole

i guess the MB designers got this thing right.. its a pretty free-flowing stock intake system. virtually every other car on the road has one.

I didn't remember seeing one in my Inline-6 C280 either.

damn...i thought our cars would have it since every other car seems to have that resonator/baffle thing to quiet down the intake...howcome our intakes arent loud then.... hmmmm
my 230K has one at the back of the SC,its cast tho.will remove it when I build intake.

The V6 engines have one. It is located to the back of the engine intake pipe, near the back of the valve cover on the passener side.

how hard is it to access the resonator? would the car need to be on a lift?

you can access it from the top,but if you want to remove it I had to remove the SC to gain access to the bolts.itd have to be cut off and the hole welded.

i found it! and i took it off! it makes a huge difference for sound. the car sounds much more throatier now. i dont know if this is normal but around 2000rpm, the engine sounds like its underwater, kind of like a bubbling acceleration sound. everything else sounds normal, just loud lol. i covered up the little hole with 3 layers of duct tape so that should be ok for now.

That's it! The duct tape should work fine for a while.
Now cut a hole in the bottom of your airbox and then make a duct to fit on the passenger side of the bumper ion the cutout that looks like a place to put a fog light. Then connect up a 3" diameter hose to the new duct and run it into the airbox. Make sure it is all air tight. You will have made a nice ram air system and kept the stock airbox.
Also remove both the steel and plastic screens on your MAS.
Cutting and fabing the 3" diameter ram air system really made a hugh difference to my V6 C280.

What do you do about keeping water from getting sucked into the 3" tubing that extends to the foglight cut-out... that can cause alot of damage to your mas, etc.
