Has anyone ran a C36 on a track day event. The local BMW club here at Portland International Raceway is inviting me out to their monthly track day event. Just curious what to expect from the C36...I come from the world of shifter kart racing so driving skills should improve my chances against the M's...

Unfortunately, w202 is no match against the E36 on the track. :(

They have what they call tri club day and they would love the AMG cars to come out and play...If you have not ever been around PIR it is a great track. The Champ car drivers love it. 2 long straights where we could give the M cars a good taste of horsepower. They also have drag racing on Friday nights with a variety of cars from Vipers to Civics. Good chance to show what the Benz has in the 1/4.

I will dig out the info tonight. You can also check the website www.portlandraceway.com for more track info and schedule. I frequent the track so I just ask around. This weekend they had SCCA races that were great...couple of fast 939T's from your neck of the woods and the Mazdaspeed guys were tearing it up. SIR should have something similar...I only go up there when the Nitro boys are runnin...now that is horsepower!

While I think the E36 M3 is a great car. In stock form it's just not a match for a C43 that is 250 lbs lighter than stock and has full control over the tire footprint, ie my spring (1000 lb/in-front), (750lb/in-rear) and sway bar setting front and rear allow me to use all of the tire not just the outside edge.

At this time I am pretty sure my acceleration would be better too, even with no Supercharger as I can run some 0-60mph in around 5.3 sec to 5.5 sec.

And lastly I can run larger tires, a 275/40/17 all the way around. Well it will be a couple of weeks for the fronts but work is close to being done. I now have 255/40/17 on the front.

So I guess the BS will just have to stop on my part and I will just go to a track day and see what is the result.

But having the great control over the tire camber to where the tire stays flat to the road surface is key to going fast and I just don't think a stock or say H&R spring fitted E36 M3 can match my current C43's capability. The E36 M3's roll over on the front tires too much causing them to only use the outside edge during very hard cornering with R - DOT tires, thus losing traction.

Jeff What did you do to lighten up your C43?

Speedy...where did you find the SSR Comp wheels with the correct offset to fit your 43? Do they make them for the C36?

I lost the weight by using a lighter battery, taking out the spare tire, building a custom exhaust system, shocks and springs, wheels were a hugh chunk (AMG 26-28 lb vs. SSR 15.5 lb) Brakeman brakes saved 40 lbs. fan and clutch driven off water pump, etc. If you do a search I think i listed a chart with all the weight saving items.

The front 17"x8.5" wheel is for an Audi and has a 5x112mm bolt center and an 35mm ET. Fits perfect. The rear 17"x9.5" 42mmET and 5x114mm is for a Supra or other car and was redrilled to fit the Mercedes bolt pattern. The Wheel Suppy did the work and it came out very nice. You can not see any evidence of the change when the wheel is bolted up.

Another way to lose a chunk of weight is to change out the gas tank...these cars have fairly large and heavy tanks... If you go with Fuel Safe tank it will shed some weight and add some safety on track days too!

Sadly the E36 M3 would take 202's on the track....except Jeff's

I still think that the 2 cars are close enough that it really comes down to driver skill and car setup...with the AMG it is important to keep as much contact patch to the pavement as possible so you can actually utilize the horsepower advantage. I use a Raytek infrared thermometer to read my tire temps on the inside, outside, and center. This is extremely helpful in determining correct tire pressures and suspension setup. Balanced braking setup is also huge for late braking after high speed straights. Since the M's are good in the corners it is important to keep your advantage from the straights(momentum is everything in racing)I think some tower strut bracing in the front and rear will also be helpful. I am working on shedding 400 to 500 lbs from my car which will be huge. Losing things like A/C pump, power windows, interior door panels, power seats, and a variety of other items will get me there. A C36 under 3,000 lbs would be outrageous. AMG tuned cars were born to run and with some simple mods can be the fastest as well as the best looking car on the track!

again... 'TUNED' w202 will still struggle against 'TUNED' E36. Anyone who goes to the track can tell you that. Yes, skill counts. Nevertheless, given the same driver drives the two cars, E36 will come out on top. :(

BENZ is a LUXURY CAR. We RULE the highway! Not tracks! :p

Well I am here to tell ya that if a E36 does get past me it will be all blood..sweat..and tears to stay there. Our cars may have a lot of "class" but they are damn fast too...
