can some one please tell me were the ecu is located on the 1996 w202s and is it hard to take out? do you think its possible that i can take it out or i have to go to a mechanic to take it out? thanks!

On the passenger side (i.e. right as you look into the bonnet) at the back near the window is a black box, undo the screws. The ECU is behind the fuses, should be labelled VDO or BOSCH.

This are for euro version of the car...
For US Specs, look under the steering wheel .. There is a small cover..pop the cover....

For US spec
The ECU should be on engine bay, the side that close to the firewall & front windshield on the "passenger side".
There should be a black covering (in triangle-like shape) that covers the ECU and the tranny module.
The ECU and tranny module are mounted on the same metal bracket (back to back). Once you found the ECU location you would need to unscrew the screw that secure the metal bracket .
Once you do that that, you could slide out the whole "ECU+metal bracket+Tranny module" sandwhich out (unplug all the wiring harness before take it out). Then you could unbolt the ECU piece from the "sandwhich" :).

i found it. its on the passengers side. it has a label on vdo. and its a silver box right?
