Anybody who got their instrument cluster changed.....

Did you reset the mileage reading to the actual mileage the car has??

Or did you just leave it as is....

For the ones who got it resetted.....how can it be done?????

I just called dealer and told me they can't do it....

My local MB garage is telling me something like it is illegal to do some sort.....

You will need stardiagnostic or any other software that is similar with starting prices of 200 on up to 20,000. Some interface through the service connector in the engine bay, others will work off the OBDII underneath the driverside dash.

btw it is not illegal to do. however when you sell the car you must disclose that you did change the cluster and had the mileage resetted. Usally you provide a certificate of sorts that this was done. Failure to do so is fraud and that is illegal.

dealer can't even do it.

I had my cluster changed and the dealer could not event put back the real mileage on the car. This means my car shows 68 000km less than actual.

they why the dealer won't change it, even if I had my cluster changed under warranty?

Maybe because the law completly bans changing odometer even for gbood reasons like mine?

I've had to have my cluster changed twice by the dealer.

Once, for a speedo problem. The second time it was because the mileage was not set properly the first time. It was treated as a recall.

Both times the new cluster had to be shipped from Germany (took a week) with the mileage set specifically for my car.

The proper cluster changing procedure includes leaving your car at the dealership the ENTIRE time the cluster is on order. So the mileage will be set properly when reinstalled.

i;m with htfan on this one. i don't believe the dealerships have the proper tools to change the odo reading. had my cluster changed twice for broken leds, fixed under warranty. they had to order the cluster direct from germany and the approx. mileage of my car was programmed into it. this was all done by a high volume mercedes dealer in boston.

Here is something to keep in mind.

For those having clusters replaced at a dealership for repairs they will make sure that the milage is correct. This is changed via their stardiagnostic computer system which plugs into that 16pin? round port in the engine bay. It is the same computer they use to turn on options such as phone, comand, xenon, cd changers etc... on cars.

However, people like w202mod and myself who have bought used clusters from other sources dealers will turn you away with this request unless you are really good friends with the techs and they will help you with the request.

So usally the only recourse for people doing swaps on their own is to find an indy with the proper tools to reset it. Do a search on the internet for mileage reset devices and you will see a bunch of different options.

Early in November look for a how to re this issue as well as 208/210/202 cluster swaps including software changes.
