How different (if at all) are the transmissions in the C230 and the C36? What will I need to do the swap or is it just a straight across swap with no extra parts?

I think they are different..the C36 tranny is from an E-class i believe.

THe C36 is a E-class 4Sp i think. and the c230 if you have a lower year has a 4sp or if its a higher year might have a 5sp. You might wanna ask Car Nutz in Bellevue??? They may know what to do

Yah, my car is the 5 speed one. So, the C36 is only a 4 speed?

1996 and before, the C36 was fitted with a 4 speed. 1997 was the only year the C36 had a 5 speed.

98 BENZO if ur gunna swap out engines and trannys anywayz you might as well go with a C43 or 55 engine.

I would, BUT those engines are expensive and I haven't had any luck coming by one for a good price. Denlasoul, sent me a link for a guy who has a C36 engine for sale for 2500, which is really affordable. I also figure, when I get the engine I can tune it up a little before I put it in the car (such as bore it over, bigger cam, and etc.) then I will have a pretty fast car. It's all in the planning stage right now, to see where everything fits in at.

Actually, there's not much to be done on the C36. It's already been bored and cammed and stuff by AMG. I don't think there's much improvement left on the engine besides forced induction or silly gas.

Maybe you could get a C280 engine and slap a turbo kit on one instead?

That's a good idea also, about taking the 280 and playing with that engine. Is there any turbo kits for the car do you know?

I know someone does..but i don;t remember who. There's a couple of people either on this board or other MB boards with a turbo's C280

Well, now the trick will be finding someone that is getting rid of their 280 engine. Anyone want to trade engines? I am telling you, this little 4 banger really goes, I once got up to 90 mph, but then the car made weird noises and i slowed down.

Mossellman has a twin turbo for the V6 C280 engine. Puts out almost 300hp at the crank...so they say.

You could check your tranny by comparing the gear ratios to the C36 (97 only). Your C230 will have the tranny gears in the owners manual, or you can goto mbusa.com and look for the information to compare. If they are the same, then get the 280 and twin turbo that sucka! Maybe then you and "C" can keep up with me on 405! LOL!!!!!!

Hey 98 Benzo there is a C280 engine on Ebay right now for like 400 bucks. GO BUY IT MAN

I looked on Ebay and I can not find that engine. I found a 3.2 litre from the W203's, but they want to much for it, also, it probably wouldn't fit.

Remeber that you'll likely need to also need the ECU (or modify yours) for whatever engine & tranny you swap in.

If your willing to do boring & replace internals why not just build up your engine with a trubo or supercharger?

Without even addressing the internals, I was pushing 270HP at the crank last year on my little 2.2L. With the rebuild I'm doing right now (which will support 15psi of boost) I should be pushing 320 HP. That's with a much lighter engine than a v6 or v8, so guess who will be faster? :D

Well that is what I originally wanted to do, but I was having no luck finding engine parts. Where did you go for all your parts? Are you here in the US? I have always thought it would be cool, to have a sleeper. What is the big difference between the 220 and the 230?

As I understand it, the difference is 1liter of displacement, and the block is slightly different.

Check out my website, and it will give you lot's of information about what I had prior to blowing the piston, and what's going on/in to the rebuild now:

Are you in WA State or DC? If your in WA State, I'm next door in Oregon.

Actually its only a 100cc different - 1/10th of a liter. :)

I live in "Da Ghetto" a.k.a. Renton. Which is kind of close to Seattle. Well Denlasoul and I are headed to Ocean Shores this weekend with a bunch of M3's and a couple other Mercedes for a GTG down there. If you want you should come on up on Sunday. I really want to see your car, sounds like you put a lot of work into it.

Unfortunately, I'd have to push my car right now, since the engine is in pieces. :(

However, it should be back together in a few weeks... fingers crossed... I can't wait! Can you say 13's in the 1/4 mile. :D

Maybe once I'm up and running you'll have to come down & we'll go to the track.

Have fun,
Jason
