Can I scan for engine fault codes even though I reset the CEL?

Just like the title says.

My CEL came on the other day so I unplugged the battery to reset it.

Then when I restarted the car for the first time after hooking the battery back up the car shuddered a bit with a little rough idle...could this be like the computer resetting itself?

The car seems to be running fine now

Can I go to autozone and have them scan it or is nothing gonna come up unless the CEL light is on.

Obviously im assuming the MAS

well when you reset the CEL light, it clears all the code, but chances are that if there is a problem then it will likely appear again soon. then you you can scan it again for the code.
