There are a lot of subtle differences.

Just to iterated

94-97 W202 model
1. have the bottom of the front bumber, portion of the rear bumper, and side skirt (actuall its body panel, so there is no side skirt) all painted black.
2. 97 model have updated headlight. (which look a hell alot cleaner)
3. 97 have more updated climate control (digital climate control like up to 1999 models).
4. external radio antenna on the rear quarter panel.
5. 97 model introduced the infrared key
6 94-95 model has the zebrano wood pattern, for the wood panel where 96-97 and up has burlwood pattern for the wood panels.

98-99
1. Have the newer front bumper, newer rear bumper style, and factory sideskits all painted body color.
2. Update center front grills.
3. Updated steering wheels.
4. Internal radio antenna (no exterior antenna visible on the body).
5. newer Factory headunit
6. 2 tone seat available for non AMG W202 for sport package.
7. Updated smoked factory tailight.
8. Updated trunk lid (subtle different in shape, but you need to see them side by side to understand the different).
9. 99 model have the wireless (radio-wave) key.
10. Xenon headlight is offered as option on 1999 model and (1998 for C43 model).

I am sure I might missed a few here and there, but those above are all the items I could think of right now.

That doesn't means the Smoked taillight was fitted from the factory ;).

It could be the original owner installed them after the fact.

or you could be confused between the OEM tailight and Smoked OEM tailight. (granted the regular tailight has the signal part smoked)

starting 96, MB put newer digital climate control on their W202...

Also these are the OEM tailight from 1994-1997 (starting 1998 the OEM tailight are smoked).

What is the thing underneath the radio?? My car has this too, but my car never came with the owner's manual, and I've never been able to figure it out.

I just rewired mine so it only goes up only when I'm lisening to the radio. Not all the time. So if I'm on a CD it stays down.

Cool info,

BUT, what are the differences externally between the C280 1996 Sportline and the Elegance versions?

I certainly cannot pick the difference since many Sportlines i see have the same black paint at the bottom on the front & rear bumpers an sides. No point using the wheels as indicators since nearly every machine has had them changed.

Both the Sportline and the Elegance have a small badge on the thin trim just under the side blinkers. These badges are completely indistinguishable in any phone i have seen.

Im going crazy over this.

Here is an a 95 C280 advertised as 'Elegance' (may have to click a few times if error is posted)

Im damned if i can tell the difference. Both look identical, i fail to see any so called sports skirting.

its true up to 1997 the C280 has the option of sportline.

It is very easy to spot one stock vs sportline stock.

There are no visible body works from the outside, however the details are as follow

C280 Sportline:
1. Bumper molding and body molding are body color with no chrome trim.
2.CF pattern trim on the outside B Pillar post. (just like C36) - although I have never pay attention if it is in fact the same as C36.
3.In us at least C280 sportline comes with 15" AMG monoblok (just like the wheels on C36, C43, and CLK55 (W208) but only in 15").

C280 stock:
1. Bumper molding is "grey" in color and there are chrome trims on top of these moldings.
2. Exterior B Pillar post is in Gloss Black.
3. Standard 15" regular wheels (non AMG).

Again these are visible and obvious once you know the differences ;)

Hope this helps.

Seems there are more individual options on Euro-spec cars-

Although my C280 has a sport suspension, the interior has wood trim, and the b-pillars have the gloss black trimmings. It came with 15" monoblocks, which were curbed countless times parking in San Francisco where it lived much of its early life here. Now it has replacement 15"monoblocks..The car was my moms, and now its mine. The car was bought in Germany in 1996, and brought into the U.S. privately. Not sure about alll the different option packages in Europe, but the sport suspension must have been somthing one could specify, without the trimmings.
It is also a strange color for w202's, beryl blue metallic. Were there more paint options in europe??

Shes on her last leg- but her uniqueness makes me want to throw a new engine in her and keep her going rather than purchasing another w202 to take her place.
