Just wanting to know if there's a way to detect/monitor if ignition coil or coil packs need to be replaced, before the engine stalls or goes into limp mode?
Are OBDII scanners able to detect these or do I just wait until these actually break down?
I had 1 ignition coil pack replaced a few weeks ago, and I just want to be aware before the other coil packs need replacing.
Thanks again for your help.

If oyu had a star diagnosis you could check the actual values and watch the return spark voltages.. Im not sure if the aftermarket scan tools can do this or not.. that would be the only way to check them.. but there really isnt any point to sit there and watch them constantly, you would probably have to dedicate the rest of your life to watching the return voltages to see if there is a miss. they may never fail again.. or somewhere down the line they may need to be replaced again.
I wouldnt bother watching them just to keep an eye on them, just wait till you feel a rough idle and the check engine light comes on.

you can check the resistance through the coil. get the specs from alldata or mitchell and compare the data to see the health of your coils.

thanks guys.
i know, seems pointless watching those things constantly.
i guess i am just being too cautious.
i will just worry about it when the idle becomes rough.
have a good weekend and thanks for your help.

before you change the coil pack, change the coil ends underneath each coil pack. $10 each and they break down easily. do a search.

This is what i did with my cousins car, i hooked up my OBD II scanner and check what cylinder was mis firing, then i swapped the coil pack with antoher cylinder that wasn't misfiring. Usually it will be two cylinders at a time since each coil pack works for two cylinder. If that was problem, then i swap the boots on the good coil pack with the bad pack to see if its the boot.

After a little swapping back and forth i was able to figure which cylinder was bad and what was wrong.

Also, how many connectors do I need to purchase when putting in all new plugs?

ARound $100 at the dealer.

I believe you only need 2 connectors that attach to the actual Coil because the other 2 plugs have the plug wire that comes off.

The connector is part number 000 159 35 42 (aparently it is optional with 000 159 36 42) Those are $10 a piece from the dealer
