I've searched this site high and low, but I can't find info on how to dissable my ASR...just people talking about someday doing it.

I thought I read a post by one of our members on a different board about jumping two pins to disable the ASR..... I may be wrong though.

Anyways.....I'm sure we have at least one person on this board that knows how turn ASR off for good.

Car in question: 95 C36 AMG (4spd w/ASR)

Thanks!

Just sent them an email, along with an email to Brabus for a kill switch.

but I thought there were guys on this board that turned off their ASR themselves.

There might be, I cannot recall though. I do remember seeing a Thread or two on Mercedesshop.com. Try doing a search over there.

edit: Try this Thread. (http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?t=55692&highlight=asr+defeat)

this was one discussion on the topic....but they could never figure out the C36 ASR set-up.

http://mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?t=55692&highlight=disable+ASR

after many hours of searching this topic.....Lots of C36 owners interested in doing this mod, but no-one has a wiring diagram of the ASR unit.

I found a very basic diagram, but nothing official.

I'll figure this out!

spent too much time looking into this today......going out for beers.....later!

So what are the benefits of not having the ASR working other than being able to do a few burnouts? I must be missing something.

You would have more control over your driving style.

Yeah, my 97 C36 didn't come with ASR but I wish I had it :(

on my 2000 c230k the ESP doesn't come completly off when pressing the "off" button

and I think that's why I got so low numbers on the dynapack dyno which measures power at each of the wheels.

I'll be able to confirm this as soon as I can get a dyno on a roller dyno

When my brakeswitch failed I lost ASR/BAS/ABS and I got a lamp on the instrument cluster to tell me so. Sure enough, none of those things worked while the switch was broken, cruise didn't work either.

My plan was to check out the switch, look at the plugs and wiring connecting it up and then make a harness to go between the car and the switch so I can install my own switch to kill it. Flick the switch and for the remainder of the journey there will be no ASR(or ESP)/BAS/ABS so it'll be down to the driver to control every aspect including braking, plus no cruise control! Flick the switch back and then take the key out, next time you start it up you'll have all the driver aids back.

I need to check if this affects the operation of the tail lamps. If it does affect them then this mod is only for use on the drag strip or the dynomometer.

This mod should be about $15 rather than the $2000 renntech or whoever mod and the net result is the same :)

The final and real solution should be the installation of a LSD (mechanical) with the possibility to disable the ASR when you want (by the factory switch if possible), because I'm still wondering how a mechanical LSD will work with our ASR.

Does someone have ever installed a LSD in our W202?

thanks:)

I think LSD is a factory option on the W202, it would need to replace the ASR/ESP completely as those systems would probably not function with the LSD in place. ASR/ESP could probably be disabled using the workshop diagnostic software in that situation.

So i guess i can add LSD to my car since I don't have ASR oe ESP?

AFAIK LSD is an old-school mechanical traction control which uses something resembling a mini gearbox to fix a slipping wheel, built inside the rear diff. You can see how a manufacturer of mass-produced cars would prefer to instead have a conventional rear diff and a bunch of sensors! ASR/ESP tries to emulate LSD by just braking a slipping wheel or backing off the engine in some situations.

If LSD is just an enhanced rear diff then maybe it's as simple as swapping the rear diff for the LSD-equipped item!

None of our MB's have an LSD option in the United States. It know AMG sells them but you have to know someone that can get them here. They cost a fortune, something like 8k. There's a guy named Harris on www.mbworld.org that has access to them. However no AMG's or Non - AMG's have LSD rears in the US from the factory.

Correct. LSD is not only a traction control but also a "way to drive" that full utilize the torque/power without cutting power or braking but, it need much more ability and experience to drive, expecially for a RWD.

MB have developed also a electronically LSD (EBD?) previoulsy of ASR, I thing that that work mainly as a mechanical LSD, not as a traction control. It was on first C class option list (year '94 more or less).

As far as swapping to a LSD, I'd like to know how this can work with ASR, probably ASR will cut power previoulsy that mechanical LSD work.

I'm not sure why, but I find the car much easier to drive on the
snow if I turn off the ASR switch. (keeps the yellow triangle
lighted) Too bad it doesn't really turn off ASR completely.

Speaking of winter driving... do you know if the W202 was ever
available with 4Matic in Europe? Seems like all MBs now are
available with 4Matic.(except the cabriolets)

Thanks!

Dear bobcat,

as far as the ASR, also in snow I find the ASR on much easier to drive but this is my personal view, besides here do not snow too much, fortunately.
:) :) ... but these days probably will snow:( I'll try if it.

I can confirm that 4Matic were never available on W202 series here in Italy and I'm quite sure (99.9%) in all Europe.

Only normal sedan and estate with RWD.:)
