I searched for this condition thinking is a common problem, but looks like is not.
I have a leak between the oil filler neck and the valve cover. Can this be taken out a gasket replaced without taking the valve cover out?
Thanks in advance.

maybe just the cap gasket is worn out, try replacing the cap first, otherwise, from what you explained, sounds like there is a crack in the valve cover.

Is your car a newer C280.. with the V6??
its a possibility that its the oil cap.. or the filler neck tube that goes inbetween the oil cap and valve cover, kinda like an extension to pop through the engine cover.
more than likely its the extension tube.

I have a 98 c280 (v6). and had a leak in the valve cover which the oil filler cap protrudes out off. This value cover does not have a gasket, i had to use a form a gasket that i bought from kragen. anyway, when you take off this valve cover, you can unscrew the oil filler from the inside and then twist off. (there is no gasket which goes between the oil filler and cover)
probably best to just remove valve cover (regakset) and tightent he oil filler cap. it wasnt hard to do. took me about an 1 hour altogehter (but make sure you let the gasket set in for at least a half a day before driving)

You do not need to remove the valve cove in order to rplace the extension tube for the oil cap.
It does come off without going through all that trouble.

Thank you guys for the prompt response!
Yes, it is the V6 engine.
The cap gasket shows a deep groove where is sits on the neck. For now I took the cap gasget out and installed in the reverse position which looks like new. I'll keep an eye on it because it really looks to me that the leak comes from in between the neck and the valve cover, but I cannot discard it is coming from the cap gasket.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks,
Rene
