OK, I've done some research and the best way to solve the
issue with window tint scratching is to apply a strip of Mohair
felt to the inside lip of the door panel molding. Someone on one
of the many posts on this issue had mentioned it and was correct.
I've been using this product at my tintshop now for a little while
and it works great. I bought a roll of this stuff from a company
called CR Lawrence. If anyone needs this product I could make
it available to you as well. scott_blackout@yahoo.com.
Before applying this product I recommend wiping the molding
edge down with prep alcohol and make sure it's room temp or
warmer. Trim to approx. width and press it down firmly. Please
feel free to contact me with any questions regarding tinting.
Scott.

I will put together a reasonable price for my time cutting,
packaging and shipping. It will be cheaper than buying a 100
foot roll like I have. Anyone interested e-mail me direct at

I've been real busy with work and my computer at work has
a virus that won't alow me to access my e-mail. Sorry.
I will put the kit for the 202 together for $10 for anyone in the
club. This means I will cut the felt to the proper width and
just longer than the length. Just trim off an inch on either end,
this gives you something to hold on to. I am able to accept a
credit card through my business via phone (414)329-4000, or
for those who prefer PayPal that is fine with me.
(scott_blackout@yahoo.com). Like I mentioned before use prep
alcohol to clean the molding down and allow to dry before
applying. Any questions please call or e-mail me. Scott.

will the door pannel have to be removed to do this?

My car was starting to look ghetto. I just sent you the 10 through paypal. My tint shop will redo my windows for free. Should I have them install these strips?

tinter101
02-17-2005, 08:05 PM
Yes the door panels will have to be removed for this install.
I suggest that you do it yourself and leave them off for the
tint shop. Make sure you leave them switches for the power
windows though. I don't like strangers removing panels on
my car especially if they aren't familiar with them. I will include
directions with the product.

JDoggery

can you post the directions here or do you have any pictures of the install. i also need to order a set from you as my recently tinted windows are starting to scratch

Directions for door panel removal should be on the site. If you
order the felt strips from me, I will send you instructions for
applying the felt strips properly. If you want to call me while
I'm at work I can look at my door panels and explain how to
remove them (414) 329-4000. Tinter.

My tint shop mentioned this issue. Does it affect all W202 years? I've had my tint for about two months now without any scratch issues.

As far as I know all 202's have the same trim moldings.
No felt. If yours aren't scratching yet, they will be. Keep an
eye on the driver door window (the most used). Clean it
real good on a sunny day and look close. When you see the
very first one starting, you should get the felt strips. Let me
know. Tinter.

how hard is it to remove the door panels to put the felt strips on?

Eh I'd rather not wait for the problem to arise. Go ahead and send me the info and I'll buy a set.

I've had my windows tinted for about 4 years now, and haven't had one scratch yet, but you said that it will over time. Do you think it will still scratch even though i've gone so long without scratching?

tinter101

Kswiss, You are the longest I,ve heard going with no scratches.
Is it possible that the tint shop sanded your molding when they did it. It might have been done without you knowing. What year
is your car? Tinter.

wow.
and i thought it was only MY car, or dust getting in causing the scratches.

i have had the scratches on my tinted windows (worst on front driver side) for almost 3 years now. just kinda ingored it.

i agree with the ealier postings. u probably WILL get scratches eventually....

Tinter,

I'm still interested in a set and haven't heard from you. If not by next week I'll just buy them from my tint shop. My front drivers side is getting scratched and I need to keep it from getting worse asap.

My freaking window is scratched! I dont even have tint. :(

tinter101

Denlasoul, with your fingernail, check to see if the scratch
is on the inside or outside of the glass. It is way more common
for it to be on the outside do to a piece of sand or gravel getting
trapped between the outer molding and window. Either way
there isn't much you can do other than getting a new window.
From what I've learned, glass companys can only buff out scratches on windshields and not side glass but it wouldn't hurt
to ask. Also if the scratch is on the outside, tinting the glass
now would actually make the sratch more obvious. If the scratch is on the inside of the glass, I would take a popcicle stick and
run it between the molding and the window back and forth to
free up whatever debris is causing this to happen. If it's on the front door put the window all the way down and you should be able to see the whole molding and clean it off. Hope this helps.
Tinter.

where can i purchase plexus? are there any local (chain) stores, online will only ship ground?

also, i got the strips, but haven't gotten around to installing them. you also mentioned cleaning the rubber part before applying the strip. what kind of product should i use for this? is it difficult to remove the panels, i have seen the instructions on the threads, but how long does this take? are there clips back there too? has anyone else who purchased these strips installed them and if so how long does it take? i'm just trying to see how much time i need to set aside to get it done. thanks guys.

Wipe the inner edge of the trim piece down with prep alcohol
and allow 30 seconds to dry then apply felt strip. Keep the edge
of the felt even with the top of the molding, if you stick it too low it
might catch the window when rolled down and start to peel back.
Panel removal is simple. Remember you don't have to remove the
wood/CF pieces on the panels or anything with the seat controls.
Good luck, Tinter.

Well, I finally installed the felt strips and managed to only break one thing while attempting to take off the door panels. I found that I later only needed to take off the top portion of the door to access to rubber insert. I'd like to thank tinter for taking time out of his day too, to help me out with this a few thousand miles away, hehe. Now, I have noticed that the windows seem to be slower going up and down and I don't want to burn out the window motors. Have you tinter, or anyone noticed this after installing these strips? If so, does this pose a threat to the life of the window motors? I don't roll my windows down that often, well, at least the rear, and I don't want to burn them up.

I haven't noticed it being any slower but I guess I wasn't
really looking for it. Try some tint polish like Plexus to keep
a very smooth surface on the tint. After a break in period I
think it will be fine. Rain-X can also be used I believe. This fix
is so new I don't know any more info. It's been working fine
on all the Acura TL's, Mustangs, and Accords that we tint.
Tinter.
