every few turn-on's the car will start and just shut off. for no reason. nothing seems to be wrong with it at all either.

and it may be just the car but normally it starts, goes to under 1000 rpm..jumps up to 1200 or so then back down to 900-1000 rpm and idles there. all this is immediate after turning on. any idea?

Sounds like the MAF/MAS to me. My old car was doing the exact same thing and when I replaced it, everything was fine. My current car is starting to act up on me when it's cold too! I'm suspecting the MAS. We'll see how it pans out.

Usually it starts off pretty un-noticeable.. just a few hard starts here and there. Eventually it will get worse to the point where it just won't want to run very well at all. They are pretty expensive for the part. It is very easy to put in yourself as the sensor is right on top of the engine bay. You can get the brand new OEM part for $290 from www.importec.com.
