I'm looking for someone who knows/knowledgeable in custom subwoofer box building. It would be especially helpful if you owned a W202. ;) Trying to plan out a small project and will need some help.
Thanks.
Like what kinda box u want.....ported, sealed.......what size......like u goin for SPL comp.....or sound quality?.......Let me know......i just build ported boxes.......and what type of subwoofer?

what are you trying to achieve? Fiberglass, or just a plane jane box. What kind of drivers do ou have, or looking to buy? like nicj said, what are you going after spl, or sq? a few factors to consider when looking at this sort of thing.;) let us know

Well I'm thinking about a 10" or maybe even 8" sub in a ported box. I dont think I will be running that much power, maybe in the 200rms area. Ideally, I would like a small (really small) box. I know there are a few choices in subs out there, but I need to learn more about that. Just a little something to enhance the low end, and good sound quality would be relatively high on the list.
edit: also, lighter would be better. So a smaller woofer that sounds better in a smaller package would be more desireable than a larger, bulkier sub&box.

go on JL audio's site, they have directions and mini blue prints on how to build boxes

rockfordfosgate.com you can go under support and type in the demensions of your box and it will list the cubic inch airspace inside the box which is really helpful if you don't want to do the math yourself.

I'm also looking to build a custom box. I would be looking to first off eliminate rattle. The box would be two 12's, sealed or ported it doesn't matter; possibly porting into the first aid kit area to get some air out of the trunk. I'd also like to have them pushed far enough back to access the spare. Then to either have grills or something where if I were to put things in the trunk they would not damage the speakers. As far as the amp, i'd like to have it mounted vertical on the side. Most likely on the side with the cd changer pocket because it is larger for one and then also closer to the battery. I've seen a lot of nice install's, but would need help with something of this sort as I am not skilled in this area. Anyone who has done a custom setup and is willing to provide pictures and or information/ assistance would help out all who are interested in this topic. Thanks.
Jdog.........Ok I build custom box setups from..........Chevy Caprices............To Mitsubishi Eclipses.....................There are different styles of ported boxes...............If i can get some pics i'll show u ..........But u want one for 2 12"subs....what brand and how many watts?.........Hit me back

So like u want something to help out your factory speakers just a lil bit.....right i got cha.......Let me know if u don't find anything on building or buyin it..............Because i build them....
Are U good At CARPENTRY?........................let me know
Because box building is easy.............................
And also there are a whole lot of different aspects of building ported boxes.....Like the wider the port the lower the frequency pick up.......the smaller the port the higher the frequency pick up...........so if ur goin for Sound quaility, u probably should go with a 10" sub and a box with a 1 3/4" port or lower....but let me know we can talk about it..........holla

For sound quality:
you definetly want a sealed box because it gives tighter bass response
10" sub would be ideal since you have more options, whereas 8" sub options are limited. You dont want a 12" sub since you are going more for sound quality.
A JL audio sub should work (although some r quite heavy), I would say one a 10" W6v2 would be perfect.
The ideal set-up to save room would be making a custom box where the spare tire is in the center. It allows you to keep the spare tire and basically the same amount of room as w/out a sub.

he said about 200 rms...
i say IDQ for SQ.. works well in small enclosure.. :D

Thanks for the input so far. I am still looking to see if the design I want will work. It's pretty small and I would think a 10" might be tight.
Because of the difficulty of the location/design, I may try and recruit someone to build one for me.

what are you looking for?? loudness?? tightness?? whats your budget?? what kind of music do you listen to?? theres alot of question...

I am hoping for a combination of loudness with tightness, that will not overshadow the sounds of the inner cabin.
No budget, but would like to be practical.
Music type is mainly R&B, Hip Hop kinda stuff, but I do listen to a very diverse spectrum of tastes.

If you listen to hip-hop I think a 12" sub would be ideal for that since its not as tight as a 10". Do you think 200rms will cut it, I think thats pretty low. Again I say get a 10 or 12 inch W6v2 its about 400 watts rms, and make a custom box in the center of your spare wheel. To bad you dont live closer I would help you do it its pretty simple if you got the right tools.

If 200rms will not cut it, then I am willing to up the power. My main concern would be the box size and location.

I'd get a 10 IDQ in a .8 cu Sqft with polyfill.
I love my IDQs i've had it for about 4 years and still working find. Also if your tight on space you can always use polyfill to give the illusion of added air space. Also a simple box is cake to make, if you need help, let me know. But if you want custom , i'd get it glassed, so that it will fit perfectly.

Denla,
you have to figure out how much space you are willing to give up. For example you could give up .7 cu ft., then you could start looking at box and subwoofer that will do the job with .7 cu ft.
I currently have DLS UR10" with box for sale. It has .7 cu ft. It used to get 300 watts and it is enough for W202(given if you set everything else properly).

Just read this thread. Sorry for being late to the party...
as you probably know by now, either you need to know the box you will use, specifically its internal volume, then find the proper driver to match ; or know the driver you will use, and design a box with the proper internal dimensions to suit. There are 100's of choices in driver actually... far fewer, the smaller your box is tho. ;)
Lot of good choices at great prices here:
http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&DID=7&WebPage_ID=30
I use them almost exclusively now. Don't be afraid to use a "home" woofer for your sub. Your bass box will most likely be very isolated from the reach of liquids and other outside influences, thus not requiring a "mobile" speaker. However one good thing I'd say about "mobile" drivers is they're more apt to have thiel/small parameters that make them suitable for sealed or free-air enclosures.
For a properly aligned box [i.e. running it where it has good transient dampening, as well as operating within its excursion and thermal limits, thus maximizing power handling], a sealed box will actually give you the most [lowest] bass in the smallest volume encolsure. Sealed boxes might starts rolling off sooner, however it can make significant sound reaching lower then a small vented enclosure; and have much better transient response (i.e. tighter and quicker).
As mentioned, with a smaller box options in transducers is a little more limited; though don't get me wrong, there are plenty to choose from. By proper speaker selection, I was quite successful in getting great super tight loud bass in my jeep out of two 4L cabinets, each hugged the rear wheel well. (I'm also using Bass Shakers along with those bass cabinets, covering only 40 - 100 hz) But if you're in the 0.75 - 1 cu-ft range for your box size (or even bigger), there's a lot of great cones that'll do.
I wish my laptop didn't crash and I didn't lose all my links & documents. I'd point you to a simple online loudspeaker alignment calculator that will graph the expected speaker response after you input the all important Thiel/Small parameters. I'll look in my archive and post it when I get home.
I don't mean to hijack the tread, but I too am looking for a sub box. I perfer a small box or if someone can create an enclosure that sits flush against the side near the whell well and the tail light that would be perfect. I'm gonna run a 10" infinity kappa perfect and like to mainly listen to house and rock music. More interested in clarity and sound quality over loudness. I want the sound to stay in the car and not be heard a block away.:)

looks like the cut-out should be smaller given the size of the cabinet tho.

If you want to be sure to properly match the box's dimensions to the driver you select, download the appropriate software for the type of box you're building from here :
http://www.ajdesigner.com/speaker/index.php
(software is free) Sealed or Bandpass are best in a car IMO.
here's the online version for sealed boxes - doesn't do power handling however:

Jeff, of course you know I kid ... thanx for the post. I honestly didn't think of that. That's another good reason I don't think I'll be going for it ... even better reason then the $650 it'll cost just for the boxes and shipping (US dollar is really depressed against the Pound); figure a grand with drivers & amp. ...I figure that money could be better spent towards installing your suspension kit in my car. ;)
