Hey everyone. I have been having problems with my speedo, sometimes the rpm dosent move, then gitters and moves up. Or I will start the car and for 5 minutes the speed wont move. Also, the gas guage sometimes dosent move either. I have a 95 c220 with 105,000 miles now. I am throwing out a wild guess, but could it be anything that has to do with the harness or wiring? Thanks

Sounds like your needles are sticking.
M-B sells little plastic sleeves, that can be slipped over the end of the needles, to prevent this problem on older cars. ;)
Don't ask me for the part #'s, I don't have them. ;)

Do you really think its something like that? When I first read that it seemed funny I dident think of something so simply. I will try and notice tomarrow when I drive. Any other ideas? Thanks

You said that Mercedes sells little sleeves that go over the needles to keep from sticking?
Should I go to the dealership and tell them and ask them for those cause I have the same problem...

I went to the dealership today to ask about those sleeves. They said that they have never heard of them. He recommended that I go to a local speedometer shop and get one installed. I called that place and they said that they would install a new one for $175+whatever the speedo costs from Mercedes.
I am going to just keep my sticking speedo until it gets really bad.

Here is the part # for the needle sleeves:
A 000 992 92 20.
Should cost you about 50 cents each. ;)

Ok I just got back from the dealership after checking about that part number. The guy looked it up and said there was nothing to be found. However, he did say that the part number might be a european part number. Therefore, these sleeves may exists, but not at the U.S. dealerships and so if you really and truly want to get these then it will probably take some long distance calls and some shipment from a dealer in europe.

I've had this exact same problem for more than 2 or 3 years now. I have to say it is by far the most annoying situation I have ever come across in my entire life. I paid thousands of dollars to have one of the best engineered cars in the world, and a few years later the NEEDLES ARE STICKY. Roughly 75% of the time I go somewhere I have to drive down the road slapping my dash like some redneck in a 77 camaro for a good mile or 2 trying to get my speedo and gas gauges to work. And to boot, one day when the gas hand finally came unstuck, it somehow messed up the gauge itself. Now my gas gauge reads wrong. When its reading a quarter tank, I actually have an eighth tank, and the gas light comes on shortly after. I am told a new speedo can be $275, USED.

Yes...it is a common problem.
If you want to pay more, bring it the dealer and I'm sure they can tell you something that will cost you big bucks.
If you look closely you will see (on the needle-it become mishaped a hair) where they stick to the pegs at the bottom.

You pull the cluster out, and clean the needles with alcohol to fix.
Stay away from the stealer.

How do I remove the cluster?

Create two small hooks with a coathangers. Push in a the sides of the cluster, rotate hooks so they are behind lip, and then pull out. May take a few tries, I had to use vicegrips to pull the hooks.
Use search function as this has been discussed (maybe even pictures) before.....
