Hello everyone. I have a question about spark plugs. I think its time to change them on my 95 c220 with 105,000 miles. I went to get a quote and I was told I need to change the wiring and the spark plugs. Is this true? Isnt the wiring just a power wire? Anyways, the sparkplugs range from $3-10 and the wiring from $120 at kragen to $150+ at other shops.
Basically, my question is, do I need to change both the plugs and the wiring? What is a good price on wiring? Can this install be done by me, I have little to no experience.
The last thing. I have been getting into doing most of the work on my car as I can myself. I dont want to rush into swapping the motor tonight, but want to start with a few things, filters, fluids, ect. Do you think I can change the spark plugs myself? I was told I can mess alot up if I dont put them in properly, a bit off and it can cause major issues. Thanks

If you havent changed the wires its a good time to do so.
And its just as easy as changing your oil. The key is to do one at a time so that way you dont have a bunch of wires that you have no idea of the order. So you pull one plug wire off. Undo the spark plug. Put a new one in then put a new wire then move on to the next.
Since youre getting started with your car you may want to pick up a manual for you car (I think haynes makes one) It will make DIY a lot easier instead of stabbing in the dark. :)

Really? I guess what I heard was wrong. I dident think it would be too hard, but I knew it invloved taking parts of the engine apart. Why do the wires need to be changed tho? I guess dont get that? Also, how do I screw the spark plugs in?

1. take out the intake pipe and then remove the cover on top of the valve cover.
2. remove the coil ends.
3. use spark plug remover to unscre the spark plug.

I have a spark plug remover btw, it came in a tool box I bought a long time ago, its something like 3/8" I think, but Ill double check. Also, dont I need to make sure I screw it in right, I heard if I dont it can misfire, or be off balance and ruin the engine over time. Should I do this myself? Thanks

use a torque wrench and tighten them to 20lb., if you are not sure how much you should tighten them by hand.

I believe that is called indexing to make sure the front of the sparkplug is facing in the right direction or optimum spark. Some ppl do it. Some dont. I dont... well I take that back I used to and it took me hours to correctly put plugs in.
Make sure you have a long enough extention on your ratchet as well as the plug sits pretty deep (on a M104 anways)
Tighten by hand first so you dont strip the soft treads on your head. Jacked that up and its gonna be a longer session than you would like.
Once tighten by hand do its as posted aroun 20lbs. Remember its soft metal there so dont be acking like a gorilla :)
I do sense from your post this is your first DIY. Before you start having someone there that has done sparkplugs before to assist you. Its the same process as anyother car. But do have someone with you that has done sparkplugs before to help you. You dont want to mess stuff up by guessing.
:)
