Does anyone know if there is any way to connect an external form of digital music (such as an Ipod) to existing OEM head units? Has this been done? Is an after market head unit the only way?

Im sure their is a way to connect it from the stock harness but the quality wont be that nice. I suggest putting some money into a HU and speakers after getting such a nice Ipod, then agian, my stereo is worth half my car....:D

Get an "I-trip" for your Ipod, which connects your digital music to your stock unit via radio frequency....tune in to assigned station 88.7 usually, and our mp3's play in your car with pretty good sound quality...

do you have the COMAND upgrade installed? An expensive option, but I think you can route it through the "TV" input, inplace of the TV tuner's audio.

the only way to get it working w/out after market HU is with a FM transmitter. It'll play off 88.7 or some unused frequency.

if you have an aftermarket HU then you can get RCA to phono jack and plug it in .

check on which RCAs you need the female or males.

If you have an alpine with Cnet the you can get there integeration module which is 100 and you can use your HU to control the Ipod.

My friend with a Lexus wanted to do this and ended up spending $1200. He got the Ipod, then HU and Itegeration Module. i tried to hook it up and couldn't bypass the factory amp so he got an amp also.

Getting a FM modulator is the lowest quality you can go in car audio to transmit signals. Its radio quality, you go to a certian station on your radio and can hear the music from 20ft or so from the ipod, and in a big city like SF thats nothing but bad sound. A mid to high end deck will have inputs for audio, such as Ipod, via RCA.

look here aux input (http://www.club202.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2934&highlight=aux+input) this is a solid setup from one of our very own.

dont go with the FM! the sound is worthless, i just end up turing it off and playing a CD.

I strongly recommend against getting an FM Transmitter the sound quality is terrible.

However I do recommend:
1.) Tape deck adapter is the best and cheapest way.
2.) RCA cable to the AUX input which is cheap and good sound quality.
3.) (this is how I have my ipod setup) (http://homepage.mac.com/schilderink/PhotoAlbum31.html) you can get an icelink (http://densionusa.com/merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=IA) and go to their website and select your car and you can use your steering wheel controls to control your ipod if you have them and they even offer a version for certain aftermarket radios and you can use the remote for that to control your ipod. You can also get a Pro Clip, which I have, to mount your ipod. By the way unless you are experienced with taking apart your dash ect. you need to get this professionally installed.

Good luck and let us know what option you choose.

Thanks for the help! First, I already have an FM modulator and it sucks. Second, to be perfectly honest, the reason I was asking this is because I want to put my PSP in my dash. So, the only way to do this is with an aftermarket HU?

does the PSP have video output?

No video out.

I was only thinking the sound portion as that's what this topic is on.

but get this ... from portagame.com,

Someone Hacked and altered the browser of the Wipeout game, And now before an offical broswer has even launched it is possible for the user to view can browse any site on the net.
This is just the start, Die-Hard fans will hack/alter and basically Mod the PSP in just about any and every way. It seems fairly fast and suprising that the long line of hacks have started this early. I mean the unit hasnt even been launched Europe yet, Just imagine what will happen straight after.
It's just a matter of time before someone creates a hardware mod w/a video out.
