Replaced my resonator with a straight pipe today for just $4. Bought a section of exhaust pipe from autozone for $3.99, pulled the exhaust off the car, cut off the resonator, cut off the flange that mates to the cats, cut new pipe to length, welded new pipe to old pipe, welded flange to new pipe, done.
Who else has done this on a 4cyl? After reading previous posts I didn't expect it to be any louder than stock but it definately is. It actually sounds kinda ricey, but not too bad. Can't complain for the price!
Being an engineering student and a member of my school's Society of Automotive Engineers Mini Baja Race Team I have access to the school's machine shop and experience using a lathe, end mill etc. from building our offroad racer. Made the job alot easier having a plasma cutter, welder, etc.:D

just for the environment, I seriously prefer to get a zero pressure aftermarket catback than removing it

Nah, we don't have a formula team. There's not alot of interest in the Baja team, we're actually competeting this year for the first time in like 3 or 4 years. I think building and racing a formula car would be alot of fun though. You've got me thinking... I'm gonna look into it.
Last year we build a go kart just for fun. It was origionally designed to look like a shopping cart, so the whole thing was designed around the basket of a "donated" shopping cart. Built the frame out of cold rolled square tubing, used a 5.5hp Briggs and Straton motor with a CVT, no suspension. Fabricating the steering was pretty cool, just adjustable tie rods connected to a piece extended from the steering shaft. It didn't have a roll cage or harness origionally, which ended up being a problem because the wheelbase was too narrow due the the shopping cart design and I rolled it. Luckily I decided to wear a helmet like 5 min. earlier but I still went to the ER. Almost broke my wrist, got a good size 2nd degree burn on my arm and some flesh loss from my ring finger. I could see the tendon in my finger, it was white so I thought it was bone at first. I was pissed we didn't get it on video.:D
