What is the life expectancy of a MAF?

Is your car stock?

I know there are a lot of owners using K&N air filters who report failed MAS more frequently than those using OEM air filters.

It seems to be luck of the draw, but I also encountered a failed MAS which appeared to have an oily residue from the K&N. I did not re-oil-mine either...it was a new K&N. Granted I had 76k at the time so it could have been a combination of age as well as the filter. But others running aftermarket air filters report no issues.

For a stock car, I haven't heard anyone stating they had a failed MAS until many miles, like towards the 100K mark. But it seems it really is luck of the draw.

Since replacing my MAS at 76k, I had it fail again at 119K. And I have been using the OEM filter ever since the K&N issue. :(

When did yours fail?

Like Kam said... it just depends. Mine failed at 75 and I'm useing a HKS cone filter.

Mine is stock...

I replace it around 35,000 KM, right now I have 55,000km and the MAF is giving problems..

If the car is cold.. And I slam on the breaks the car halts.

If I speed up and releas the gas peddal the car jerks as if it was down shifting.

Denlasoul.. I will try your cleaning How Too.

I took apart my MAS according to the link I provided. Cleaned it out pretty good, there was alot of gunk on it. I also removed those stupid mesh screens, do not know if it helps but looks better ;)

After taking my car for a little spin, I noticed my car is a little more responsive. Idle is not too bad hovering around 600-700 rpms with a little bouncing (you have to really look at it to notice). I did notice a funny smell, cannot really describe it. It may be just residual cleaner or something. I'll keep an eye on it for a few days.

I cleaned mine using an Audi forum procedure 16K miles ago.

Mine did't look dirty to the naked eye though.

Yeah same with mine. I only noticed the gunk when I looked at my q-tips.
