If you have a tamper proof transmission. You are going to have to buy a dipstick from MB.
Break off the red plastic tamper proof clip on the tranny dipstock cover and insert the dipstick, wait until it hits the bottom and pull out.

As far as I know, the operating temperature is 80 deg. C., and can ONLY be MEASURED CORRECTLY with a special M-B tool.

Trans fluid should always be checked at idle in either park or neutral. If you look on the workshop dipstick there are 2 different temp ranges. At the bottom of the dipstick I believe it says 20c with 2 lines about 5mm apart. If the trans fluid is cold(20c) the the fluid should be between these 2 lines. Further up the dipstick about 2cm is another reading that I believe says 80c with 2 lines about 5mm apart. If the trans fluid is at operating temp(80c) then make sure the fluid level is between these 2 lines.
The reason for the different levels at different temps is because these transmissions use a synthetic-blend fluid and it expands quite a bit as the temp increases, which raises the fluid level, much more than the conventional dinosaur fluid like dexronII. Hope that helps....

in the DIY section at www.mercedesshop.com
there is a pictorial and write-up on doing 722.6 fluid change and refill/ level check
he recommends using an infrared heat sensor to get right level - go chk it out

Just consider all of ourselves lucky that we don't have the new 7-speed trannies.

it's not that they're problematic...since it's a bit early to tell... However, the new 7-G's don't have any place for a dipstick, and they use a super archaic method to check oil levels. Basically, you have to drain the tranny, and watch the stream of oil. If the stream width "looks right" then there's enough oil...which you just partially drained. Talk about PITA
