View Full Version : New bump in the trunk!

Just though I'd tell you guys I went out and got bump for th trunk yesterday. I was considering an Infinity Basslink for about two weeks now, but when I was listening to the radio yesterday while getting dressed I heard about Custom Sounds here having some huge sale. Well I hear that everyday so I blew it off at first and they they starting naming the brands, how much they regularly cost, and how much they are now. That's when I reconsidered and thought myabe I'd go down there just to see for how much I could get out the door with myabe high powered 10"or decent 12". I wandered around for about fifteen minutes looking at different combinations of things and I finally gave up and asked the guy what to do. I told him what I wanted in a sub and, long story short, he was able to put it together for $248. That's how low prices were! I now have a 12" JL Audio W012, an Alpine MRPT220 250w amp, and box of some sort (it's well made though). I went and bought an amp kit at Walmart and tackled the job last night. It wasn't very hard, took me about 4.5 hours, and that's because I took breaks and had to make one other run to Wal-Mart for some crimpers cause I left mine at home (I did this at my friend's house cause he has a garage). All in all it was $270 installed for the whole thing. The only things I have left to do now if remount the amp to a better location on the box, buy a longer negative ground cable, and tweak the system. Overall I am very happy with this setup right now. I've wanted this since I had to give up my first system with my 1995 YUKON 2.5 years ago. This isn't earth shattering bass, it's good punch behind the music. I will post pics soon (I have my firiend's camera)

amp kit from walmart?

Yeah, Schosce (sp?) is what I bought, it was like $19, not too bad. It works just fine, all the stuff in it is O2 free copper, very well insulated. I don't have a competition system, so I don't need Monster or anything.

so you got a JL 12" W0 and a amp for 248? isnt that about normal price

davis449

Well the break down was like this: $99.99 for the amp, $79.99 for the sub, and $49.99 for the box. Maybe that is normal. I was just excited to get it done for under $300. Last sub I had was a box, Sony Xplod amp, and a Sony Xplod 10" and it cost me about $450 total installed, but then again I did have Circuit City install it that time.

Edit: Looked up the price on the 12W0-4 I have and it retails for $149.99 most are selling it now (cause it's discontinued) for highest I've seen $129.99 and lowest I've seen $89.99 on the web. The Alpine I have is retail $150.00, according to their website, and high retail I saw was $133.00 and low retail I saw was $94 on the web.

What did you do...hook it up to the stock MB system?

I did that.

Yeah I put in my deck about two months ago and that's big leap for easy install with the Bose. Get that done and it's much easier. So now I have th stock Bose with the sub and a deck. Sounds really good too. I did some tweaking today and tried turning on Low Pass filter and it wouldn't penetrate the cabin. It just didn't have any punch to it. So I've left the filters completely off, it sends the full range to the sub and sounds great. I get good penetration of the cabin and there's no distortion.

I agree..the BOSE system with an added sub/amp sounds amazing as I found the BOSE system left alone didnt have enough punch but now its great and...no distortion eitheir!

Well I didn't buy EVERYTHING at Wal-Mart. I just got the amp kit there cause there was no way in hell I was gonna pay $40 for an amp kit. Wire is wire and as I've stated previoulsy, I don't have a competition system, so I don't need to pay for gold plated bullshit. I didn't have any problems with my sony it sounded great in my truck, no distortion issues. My friend had a Sony Xplod 12" in his 2001 Accord and it sounded great accompanied by the factory system. I had already been the Sony route once, and wanted to try something new this time around.

i like the way it looks on the interior so yea, but the red box is soooo gone!!!

fake ? where do you expect me to buy the really real shit ? it looks identical - if you know what the real looks like. some like it others dont ppl are differnt so yea.

and to davis449:

you can buy any amp kit you think you want just get a 4gauge and gold plated - copper is copper and its just a wire. I had like a $25 dollar amp kit and it worked great. the thing i love about the 202 is you have the battery in the trunk which saves alot of wire and easy to run the power wire to the amp if you have your amp in the trunk.

and the custom FBglass box - yea its my first one and after all the shit ppl said about it bein hard to make and expensive - i was still stuborn enough to try and honestly - its drained $60 bucks so far for the materials, and as far as how hard it is - easy if you have the tools and if you know what your doing. just might take like a week or two but im lazy and its taking me like a month - im not in a hurry because i will be buying the alpine sub amp and flip DVD deck after the holidays so yea ill keep it updated.

Yeah you gotta try new things. If don't, you won't learn anything. This was my frist install ever. I had never done this before. That's not to say that I don't understand the dynamics and how things work, but I had never actually done a sub install before by myself. I just wanted to try something new and prove to myself I could do it and not have to pay for installation. Now I have almost all the bases covered. I can do deck install, sub install, and a CarPC install. The only things I haven't done to a 202 are custom box and door/rear shelf speaker replacement (I don't plan on doing the latter).

ok, heres an update on the fiberglass box im making,

the rough parts are out ... now its primered and needs to be sanded down a few times to get rid on lumps on flat parts of the box

my wrist is killing me from all that sanding!

http://myspace-740.vo.llnwd.net/00347/04/79/347759740_l.jpg http://myspace-020.vo.llnwd.net/00347/02/00/347760020_l.jpg

yea you can see lots of lumpy areas ...

and theres also a huge lump twards the back - im not worried about it much because the amp will be mounted over.

Alright I have looked at the pics and can follow. I am just more interested in the process of how to fiberglass a box. What raw materials / tools do you need to make it and how do you make it?

it's looking good by the way!

thanks!

ok materials - i used fiberglass matting, just cut it up into 6''x6'' pieces, then i used fiberglass-resin and hardener, mix it properly wear gloves and just start slapping it all on evenly - two layers is more then enough. this stuff dries really hard overnight

but i have to warn you - mix it EXACTLY like it says otherwise - it either wont dry up good, or it will dry up wayyyyy too fast and ruin your brush, cup and waste of resin.

do it in an area with air flow because i got really high off of that stuff. LoL

also - u see how i have nylon as the first layer? nylon makes the shape of your box, after you staple it on - brush resin over it as well and let it harden. thats why mine is sorta shiny in the pictures. this helps so that the resin stays on the nylon when your putting the glass on it, otherwise it will just drian right through and wont stick as well.

tools - nothing but a mixing cup a few 3" wide brushes and a ton of newspaper - you wont want this stuff on your floors.

i have a stand that i had this sitting on when i worked on it.

yea the tools you will find around the house - no special tool at all. :)

Thank, having a spare was a must for me. Thats a 15 with around 1000 watts rms going to it, tuned to 30 hz. Before this set up both spare tire access and fold down seat access were important, so I made a fiberglass box for one 12 in MB quart, looked like this:

Sounded awesome, but not enough output for me :(
