I'm looking for a good alarm system for my 97 C280, it has the remote which unlocks and locks the car already, but I want an alarm. Which brand is the way to go?

I've got a Clifford 3.5 RSX and I love it. You can't go wrong with the DEI line (Clifford, Viper.. etc)

your car already has an alarm. every time you lock it, the alarm is activated.

Some people want active trigging such as shock/radar sensors. Also having a paging alarm, the car notifies me if anything happens.

nenad: the built in unlock/lock feature does not sound if the car gets hit or whatever.

boominbenz: that is what i want

mymbzzl: i don't quite agree with that

The built in alarm thing isnt really a alarm is it? it locks the car and unlocks. I want the alarm to sound if something happens and notifies me.

Clifford is a good brand? How much they usually cost?

the MB alarm sounds if somene tries to break in your car, or try to start it without unlocking the car, plus it immobilizes the car as well.

how do you know if you have an alarm, I don't think i do but I have the locking unlock feature, so whats the deal, and how does it stop the car from being stolen?

In addition to what nenad said. The factory alarms are passive. That is they don't trigger unless a door is actually opened. From there they have a horn that will sound and on newer models, will prevent the car from starting.

Upgraded alarms monitor the doors, and also have active sensors which actually look out for threats via shock sensors, motion sensors, glass breakage sensors.. etc.

if u want to prove it to yourself, sit in ur car and lock the doors w/the remote, then open the door, an alarm will sound. you can do the same thing and try to start ur car, it wont start.

I have the rectangluar flip out key with ONE button, to lock and unlock. And I no keyhole on the driver side, it's a plastic square with red and green light. It is also one the trunk and on the rearview mirror.

yeah its kinda sad that our 202's have this out dated alarm system, (beamers alarm goes crazy when u even put ur hand inside an open window), this said try to get an alarm system and program it to the "stock" lock unlock button...

Heh, I tried that too, the car unlocked it the driver door. Great alarm ehh?

crazy00c230k you probably got the newer model keys.. well I'm not sure. Anyways I have the rectangle flip out key with one round button with the Star on it that locks/unlocks.

I heard many people suggest Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5. I think I'll go with those.....

this is really gay because you would think by 1997 merc would have some kind of alarm on all their cars... *sigh* the pains of having a preupdate car, you 98+ guys are really lucky, one touch up/down on all windows, newer trunk lid, better body kit, side airbags, it all makes my car look worthless, and apparently an alarm... man... if I knew then what I know now....

its hard to find a good 98-00 with the miles and price I want, at least what I have been looking at it, it is very inflated in price, and I am going to get almost nothing for my car
