View Full Version : A question about shocks?

I'm not sure if I want to lower my car, but I know I need new shocks. I was wondering how my car would feel if I were to put bilstein shocks or what kind of shocks some one could recommend. Would the sport shocks lower the car some or is the drop all dependent of the springs? Thanks for the help on advance.

the bilstein sport shock are designed for lowered cars, however I am not sure how they would fit on a stock suspension. bilstein HD are a great replacement/upgrade for the stock suspension, they are the same length as the stock ones, but a bit harder, thus enhancing the ride. another good stock replacement would be sasch shocks, they are BMW OEM's.

if i was not going to lower my car i would just get stock shocks
but if you plan to lower it in the future do it all at once shocks/springs

Hmm. I'm about to order some new shocks as well. I'd like to lower my car, but only perhaps 1 inch all around. I am disgusted with "lowered" cars but I do want some more sporty handling and appearance out of mine. So I'll probably just look into this whole pad shenanigan--because I'm certainly not getting new springs.
Plus, I was this close to ordering the sport shocks, but they probably wouldn't fit my car even though all the parts websites list that they will fit?

I you want to tighten up your handling, along with shocks, I have a complete set of AMG springs from a '98 C43 I'd be looking to sell.... stock US height, not lowered, but the higher spring rate then what you have stock will go a long way to improving your handling. PM me.

How many miles are on these shocks?

Oh, my apologies. I read "springs" as shocks in that post. My fault!
Bilstein shocks from an AMG are not the same as stock Bilstein's, the valve rate has been modified on the Bilstein/AMG shocks.

Would a set of springs from a 98 C43 even fit my pre-update 94 C280?

Technically they fit, but you would need to get the Updated springs pads (They have a 210 part number.) Do a search for spring pads and you will get lots of info!

I second the opinions above. Both my 202's are lowered with Bilstein Sport shocks. It tightens the ride and provides a flat handling. The smooth and supple Merceds ride is not lost unless you have 19's with rubber bands. Personally, I expected some harshness with this spring (H&R) shock combination. Guess those German engineers hang out togegher to get the tuning just right.
You won't regret wither choice. It is like a new car for under a few hundred dollars. Best bang for the buck available.
