How do I access the shifter bushing on my 95 C36? I am told the part is cheap but how do I replace the bloody thing? Thanks.

you would need to lift your car, or at least jack it up on all fours, then get underneath and on the driver's side of the transmission, you'll see the shifter lever going through the trans tunnel, where it meets with the other lever, that is the bushing you need to replace. sorry for poor explanation, Im in a hurry.

Yeah please do that. I just ordered a set for mine too and they should be in in a few days. Just drove it on a 150 mile trip yesterday and it just about drove me CRAZY with the buzzing/rattling noise the whole trip. Never bothers me in town on quick trips - although it does rattle then too, but 3 hours in that thing! Now I'm deaf cuz I had to have the stereo on so loud to cover it up.

if the rattling is so loud, then my guess its something else besides the grommets.

Well, its just a constant buzzing rattling noise. If you hold you hand on the shifter or apply pressure one way or the other or just press it sideways it quits.

Cool. Nice pics. So you put it on the shaft first then push the lever hole over it, right? In my mind I was thinking to insert the busing into the lever hole first then slide the whole thing over the rod shaft. Cool!

Ok, so I replaced my bushings tonight. Not all that bad with the car on ramps, chocked, and with the gearshift unlocked in the Drive position (so that under the car the linkage rod and shifter mech's slotted end are not so high up). That is one tight space to work in. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever get the clips back on. There is about 1 inch of space to play in so I had to use a very long screwdriver and some long needle nose pliers. The stupid thing on the shifter is right above the cats in the C220, so both the rod and collar were VERY HOT when I first crawled under the car - not to mention the cats right by my hands. I can see why it deteriorates so quickly - it probably softens the plastic and makes it cut too easily. I had to wait almost 30 minutes before it was cool enough to really work on and even then that brass shifter linkage rod that goes through the plastic bushing was still hot. But it is done, feels like new again, and is QUIET for the forst time in a LONG time. I might even keep it now

But you know, now looking back at your pics, whoever put my last one on must have put it on backwards cuz on the shifter end lever my clip was (is) on the side next to the sheetmetal where yours is out in the open with the rod on the sheetmetal side. That would have made it MUCH easier to install the clip. Putting it on the sheetmetal side I had like 1" to fit it into whereas the other way I could have fit my hands in there. I wonder if I should go out there in the cold and switch it or if it makes no difference? Mine was working fine the other way, but I wonder if it would ear faster that way. Hmm. I'll have to have another Heineken and think this one over

These are from the links OzC36 posted. Like he said, one bushing is item 14. But other threads in the club202 forum say there are two, which is the other?
OzC36's link from autohausaz.com only shows one bushing. hmm...

Just got my shifter bushing replaced today! Finally that annoying rattle and squeek is gone!!!!!!!!! and oh yeah i dont think there are 2 because I know he only did it from under the car and problems solved. cost 51.15 installed which seems like a good deal since people are claiming 90 bucks installed

the other bushing is at the other side of the lever its very hard to see .it conects the lever to the transmision

Ooo ok. So the other bushing is on the other side. Toward item 173, but the diagram doesn't show it. Thanks Aruba for your great How-To. I just ordered the parts and my Heineken is in the fridge awaiting for next Saturday. However, your "directions to open the bottle" seem a bit complicated. So if I have any trouble with that I'll ask. ;)

I'll just throw in some key search words for anyone who searches this later:

DynoXG,

Well spotted!

The bushings which are items number 14 and 173 are identical part numbers (1159920310) and are fitted to each end of the shifting rod which is shown as item 167 and part number 2022601833 .

Parts are cheap but the killer is labor. :(

OzC36
03-22-2010, 04:10 PM
Yes there is an identical part that is coloured green...both interchangeable.

You need to jack the front of the car fairly high on jack stands to get access under the transmission.

The bushing position is high up between the transmission and the tunnel wall so while the job of replacement is dead simple, it is somewhat fiddly. It will take anywhere between 90 seconds and 15 minutes to install the bush with the clip in position.

Thanks for the pics aruba. I was able to see where the bushings were located. I did my oxygen sensor and did the bushings too. I bought two of them from the dealer ($3.46) but I was only missing 1 bushing underneath.. Total install took about 1hr, not too bad!

Alot of people seem to be having an easier time with the forward bushing replacement. I replaced the one at the shifter, but I saw no way in hell I was going to be able to reach the front one without dropping the transmission, so I left it alone. I've been using only the one on the shifter for years now.

Also had a strange way of replacing it. I opened up the shifter console from the inside and pulled it up and replaced it in from inside the cabin.

Luckily mine was still intact. I was thinking I hope the bushing isnt missing when I was under there because that area would be impossible just to reach in..
